Can someone please tell me if these are good for my 40 cobs project?

Good day gentlemen,

Recently I created a thread on here about my plans for replacing my 2x 1000 Gavita's with 2x 20 cob DIY lights.

In the meantime I've already bought:

  • a 3D printer to print nylon brackets and parts of the modular frame design I have in mind. I was planning on creating an open source modular design to share with other enthusiasts. I've bought 6 different types of filament with it for testing purposes.
  • a soldering station
  • wiring

So basically I'm all set except for:

  • 20x heatsinks
  • power supply's

I've looked around and found these:

these 150mm / 50mm weighs 500 grams each and should be easily capable of cooling these cobs passively at 50watts I ASSUME(?)
My idea was to put the cob holders on these, or otherwise get some thin aluminium discs to cover the holes in the middle if thats needed.

And in my hunt to find something to power these leds I found these locally for only $6 each!
I'm not very familiar with these drivers so I'd really appreciate it if someone could advise me about these or other drivers and other parts I need.

90% efficiency is something to consider, but you'd have to spend at least 2-3 times the amount to get a higher efficiency driver.

You could have them set to 1.4A which would run the 1212s at 50w.

That is cheaper on a straight watt for watt basis than any other driver around as far as I know (happy to be corrected).

If you where in my shoes: replacing your 1000w Gavita for a 20 x 1212 DIY build, would you run them at 50w and buy these drivers or would you buy others or run them differently?

That is a difficult question because there are so many variables! But I would say that sounds like a good plan.

You've already bought the COBs so there's no point discussing that :)

At 50w each you will have around the same total wattage and around 20-30% extra light compared to the Gavitas with a corresponding decease in heat which are all reasonable goals.
 
@loftygoals I've bought 20 for 1 light yes. But I need to replace the 2nd gavita too. I was planning on buying another 20 citizen cobs but I could also for example do something totally different for the 2nd light.. the only thing important is that it should be comparable (harvest wise) with the 1000 gavita it's replacing and around the same price of the 20 citizen cob (1212) light im building now :P

80 CRI Citizen COBs give around 20% more lumens than your 90 CRI COBs but does that translate to more buds? Nobody really knows (although there have been a few basic tests done by people posting here). Most people are opting for 80 CRI at the moment because of the extra lumens.

I assume you're looking at www.elektrikaup.ee for that driver? Well that guy lists 80 CRI 1212 COBs for a similar price on ebay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/112138131621).

I'd email him and ask if you could get:

20x CLU048-1212C4-303M2K1 COBs
40x drivers

Then build out your lights with the same design to keep things simple from the design/maintenance perspective... and compare the 90 CRI you've already bought to the 80 CRI with more lumens.

Why don't you do one with the 20 little COBs and on the other side run 5 CLU058 3618s @ 200 each or 4 @ 250 watts? You can be our high output vs. low output tester.

I dont know but Growmau did test with the canopy 10 I know that he was using cri 3500 cobs but also allot of extra red diode. And it did nothing for his garden, I remember a week ago somebody finished his run with the citizen 1825 cri90. And it was a good run but nothing more.

Plants don't care about lumens.

If you're going to LED for the lower electricity bill I'd make them dimmable so you can find your lower wattage sweet spot. Maybe 600w to replace your 1100w gavita at 20 1212s I bet it's around 500w

Either way you'll save on bulb replacement.
 
He's right. There is an extra 12V output on the driver to power a 12V fan. You don't need to use it but it's a nice little extra.
oh cool! thanks! To be honest, I didn't even notice (I'm still a newbie at electronics).
I will use it to power the fans then for the heatsinks. Can I put some kind of pot meter between the fan and the connector to find the sweetspot for temperature of the cob?

ya sorry didn't mean to confuse. Its a little bonus if your using active cooling just means less wiring cause you can run the 12v for the fan\s off your driver and don't need another one to do it.

p.s so a cost saving too
