Can seeds go bad?

Hi, I'm new to this wonderful forum, so much to read not enough time. But I have an interesting story but I'll keep it short, my friend's brother found like 4 lbs of weed in a junk yard in mexico and somehow got it over the boarder into the states and found it's way to me, and we dont know how long the weed has been there, and I was wondering, if the seeds were there too long in a locked trunk in a junk yard....can the seed go bad and not be plantable? Should I spend time trying to grow them, or just try to get seeds from an alive plant?

Thanks for the help!

well, try to germinate a some of the seeds and see if a tap root comes out and if it does then your good to go.

If you are not aware of what germinating is yet, then go to the top of the screen and go to growFAQ and look for germinate

There is a grow in the journals forum, and he had 8 year old seeds that popped. While I suppose that they can go bad, they certainly do not have a "use by date". Try em and see what happens.

Im going to go ahead and bump this up, i have been trying to find an answer to this for a minute. I just found 2 seed bags with 10 beans a piece. They were in a box of hydro stuff i bought from a guy. Lol, he didn't know they were in there. the problem is they are a year old atleast. The dispensary they came from was shut down a year and a half ago. Alternative Patient Collective Care. The seeds are Green Dragon. I am trying to germinate them now, we'll see.
