Can a 630 watt CMH match a 1000 watt HPS?

I've been told a 1k de cmh is to much for a 5x5? I've been thinking very seriously about putting one in my 5x5x7 tent
I run 630w dual bulb cmh in my 5x5x7.5ft tent now. Heat is manageable, and I love the versatility to run either one or both bulbs at the same time from one ballast. My only complaint would be that my ballast is attached to the hood

I run 1000W single end Super HPS lights as close as a foot from the tops with my light mover. Without it then 18" is just right. Can't see a 1000W DE needing 4 ft. I always have an oscillating fan blowing across the tops too and that does help a lot. Another one on the floor blowing under the canopy to mix up the air well in the room.

A lot depends on the type of reflector you use too. Some can focus the light into a smaller footprint so then you need it higher up. I use open batwing type reflectors so can adjust tehm to tighten up the focus or spread it out more. That's one thing I don't like about the newer 315/630/945 CMH lights. They all seem to have tight little hoods so likely need more headroom to prevent light bleaching and better coverage. Love the CMH tho as it's got a killer spectrum. I'm using a 400W Philips CMH a buddy sent me. It runs off one of my 400W HPS magnetic ballasts. Not made anymore tho GE makes a similar one that uses the same ballast. Really pushes the light meter harder than the crappy PlantMax 400MH or the 18 yo 400W Hortilux conversion bulb I stubbornly refuse to trash. :)

:peace:

Those old cmh' s that can run on magnetic ballasts are far less useful than the newer square wave ballast required ones.
But I completely hear you on the hood aspect. I'm seriously thinking of experimenting with mine a bit. Maybe a pair of cutting shears to the seams of the fancy Italian aluminum to open it up a little?

Checked out the hoods for that 1000W CMH and I can see needing 4ft with the type of focus a hood like that would project.

theyve been spamming like crazy in LED threads. I think an admin caught on, some of their most blatant spam posts have been deleted

I like what I like. The guys spamming.....i just ignore them. I did the research, and ran the numbers. I made the right choice by going with my dual bulb 639 cmh. I wouldn't even bother paying attention, it's just not worth the effort.

It is fairly annoying to have any conversation interrupted by yet another guy that claims to know it all, just because he found something thst works for him. Find me someone who can and has grown in any medium, with every light, and over the course of a minimum decade.....with pics to back it all up. I might listen. I'm new, but I'm not young. I like numbers and specs, but a good part of picking what's right for yourself as a grower, whether hobby or pro, is finding those with real experience to back up the numbers. Am I wrong?

The choice is yours, but my limited experience is with 630 cmh. I keep my light between 24-30 inches. When it gets to 24, I raise it back to 30. I'm doing just fine and temps run around 77 at canopy level directly under the light. Air movement is key across the canopy for sure tho. Not too hard! Lol I have learned the hard way what a hurricane wind can do to a plant! Lolol

I'm a DIY kind of guy with 6 sets of tin snips so would think nothing of altering a design to fit my needs. I have an air cooled hood that I rigged up to run a second bulb at the other end but don't connect it to the exhaust fan and the focus is too tight for my liking so it's been collecting dust for the last few years.

Sonny has always been fantastic with me. He has answered lots of questions I have PM'd him about and has also supplied me with name and mobile ph number of the local distributer of his lights. He also has a great product. (LED and CMH)
I didn't end up purchasing off his company in the end but would have no qualms about recommending the service and products Sunplix does.

it depends on PPFD in both blue range and red. Compare a top notch CMH to the best HPS might tell the story.

I like cmh but if that were true then all major grows would have cmh instead of de. Id say a 315 is equal or better than a 400 watt.
Some of the major breeders grow up gavw 315w phantom Ii and other like that in their grow space. I'm talking 1000's of square foit griw up.. But i would. Replace a 600w hps for a 315w cmh.. I would replace for same wattas. 2x315 for 600w. I'm actaully thinking of putting 2x315w chm (2 seperated kit) in a 3x5 grow rent this winter.i'm just not sure which model to go with.. But being looking to with for months

Got over 500 grams in my 5x5 with a cheap vivosun 630cmh on a light mover with premium bulbs(phillips and sun master) could have maybe got more if i was more experienced and had some extra co2 still had TNB a bottle going with an ac venting in kept the temps high to conserve the co2 around 86 to 89 on the wall so likely 90s those may also contributed to the slightly less yield to but i don't think it did tbh.

I've got a 4x4 that I've got some super frosty results from with a 630 cmh. I was fortunate enough to have someone who knows share their knowledge of spectrum/results with me so next run I do I'm going to try a
630 cmh veg (4200 Phillips bulbs),
1000w hps Flower (progressively dimmed)
and finish the last couple weeks with the 630 cmh (3100 Phillips bulbs).
I really like the cmh for veg, I can tell the girls love it. The spectrum of the hps should give me a higher yield than the cmh, and finishing with the cmh should help with resin production with the uv.
I guess sometimes it can be more about the spectrum for what you're trying to do than how many watts you're hitting them with. I'm going for the "whole lot of really dank buds" thing.
