I heard of indians burying fish to compost than they plant on top, was wondering if it would work for crabs, dungeness crabs to be exact, i have a crab trap and the beach is 8 miles away
Thank you for your input, i dont think ill bury the whole crab but i was thinking of burying left overs, like the shell after letting it decompose and cleaned by scavangers like ants, and for all you tree hugging maniacs.. Come on its not like im burying a cat or a dog. I fish and hunt to eat, i am very resorceful with what i catch to eat, it will find its way in my belly than find its way into compost or tea.Not really an answer but I use crab shells in my dirt mix. Like 1/2 cup to every 10 gallons of soil.
So your at least half way confirmed
Id say if your throwing the actual meat in there it would defintly have a positive effect if used correctly, exactly what "correctly" means here however I cannot say.
Probably do very well in a mulch pile/vericompost bin.
I have found that a $12 coffee grinder works great for egg shells also, just have to break the shells small enough to fit into the grind. I have a grinder I use for grinding my additive for my baked goods and doubles for my egg shells.Just saying as long as you have a decent reason to get them in the first place, using leftovers is defintly in line with the organic way of thinking.
Just make sure to crush the shells up as best you can first. The more broken up they are the faster they can decompose.
A mortar and pestle would serve well.
I need to get a grider, been tossing in egg shells for awhile and I still see half shells in the dirt after months of cycling.I have found that a $12 coffee grinder works great for egg shells also, just have to break the shells small enough to fit into the grind. You honestly think the OP would throw dungeness crab meat away just for the shell? That's about as naive as that Geico commercial where the cave man asks the crab crew for a steward.and please dont catch crabs JUST to do this, bi-product is fine and great but lets not rape the ocean of its life just to get high.
You never can tell, peoples greed makes them do some pretty dumb stuff. You honestly think the OP would throw dungeness crab meat away just for the shell? That's about as naive as that Geico commercial where the cave man asks the crab crew for a steward.
Maybe your a veggie, but Im a carnivore all humans we're thats why we have pointed K9's. As a carnivore I have a food chain and humans are at top. I eat crabs, cows, pigs, chickens, and on and on. I don't feel guilty about using gods nature in the ways I need, it's natural normal and humans have been doing it since the dawn of time. I don't hunt or kill for fun ever. As far as bugs go though Im guilty.and please dont catch crabs JUST to do this, bi-product is fine and great but lets not rape the ocean of its life just to get high.
Maybe your a veggie.
