Brown is for shit not pot

This is my first grow and its very basic, I have yet to even mess with the pH levels or nutes and I think that may be the problem but I wated to make sure with some experts lol.

A bunch of the stems are turning brown at the point where the stems meets the leaves and brown spots are developing on the some of the old leaves, on top and on the edges.

Just curious as to what this is and how I can fix it, I will post pics tomorrow after class. Maybe someone can figure this thing out for me lol

Even without feeding them fertilizer, if your pH is excessively high or excessively low in the water you are using to keep the soil moist, it wont take long before you start to see things going wrong with your plants. First order of the day is to get a pH tester of some sort and make sure you are pHing your water to about just over 6.0 for clones or seedlings, and edge it up to 6.5 once they root and you start your vegetative stage. But before you change the pH levels, it would pay to get your current pH of the water you are using, and see where it is sitting.

If it is something like 8.0 or higher or 5.9 or lower then your plants will start to have difficulties accessing nutrients and will start to look like the plants in this picture.

Other than that not much more I can take a punt at till there are some pictures to look at.

Heres some pics. Something else I noticed is that some of the brown at the stem right before the leaf seem to be dark purple but not quite brown...

The pot isn't anything speacial just a seed i planted from some decent regs which makes me wonder about the brown/purple and also the leaves arent all flat they have a concave, some of them pretty bad

any advice on light cycles
She will need 18 hours of uninterupted light and 6 hours of uninterupted darkness in order to vegetate. Once she gets to about a foot to a foot and a half from the top of your pot she will need 12 hours of lights on and 12 hours of lights off, also, uninterupted.

watering tips
During vegeative growth you want to wait till the soil is almost dry before feeding and watering. Your plants look a little over watered possible causing the leaves to drop. Eventually you will notice a routine happening where your plants will consume water over a day or so and you can set your routine to that.

nute ideas or any general info you think would better my grow would be appreciated
For vegetative growth you need to feed her fertilizer that is higher in nitrogen (N) than phosporous (P) and potassium (K). (assuming your soil does not already have nutrient in it). Most good nutrients will have the NPK rating somewhere on the bottle.

If your soil is already preloaded with nutrient then you probably wont need to add any nutrient till about week 4.

Your plants need lots of air, put a fan on them. Air has CO2 in it, something plants consume like kids in a candy store. Fanned air will also help toughen your plants up. A bit like a body builder, the bigger the muscles the more nutrient they need.

Once you switch the light cycle from 18 on 6 off, to 12 on 12 off you also need to change to a fertilizer that has NPK rating for flowering, usually the nitrogen (N) is lower than the phosporous (P) and potassium (K) because you are wanting to trigger the plants flowering cycle and spend less time creating vegetation.

Within a week or two of switching the light cycle you will start to see the little hairs form letting you know you have female plants. Check on google for photos of what they look like and also for photos of what the male pods look like. If you have a male then you need to remove it as you do not want it to pollenate your females.

By that time the watering cycle should be daily as your plants begin to demand more food for bud growth. Be careful not to over water, but they will demand more and more nutrient as the buds grow.

That should be enough for now to get you going. Keep coming back in here and asking more questions and posting photos of whats happening.

Most importantly, learn about getting the pH of your watering correct. Here is a instructional video that will help you with that called, "PH & Flushing streaming video".

Get that bit sorted and control your watering and I think those problems will clear up in a weeks time.

Oh man thanks for the info, Im going to check out my locl grow shop and see if i cant get those nutes.

Also, any information on the cheapest grow lights, im using the fucking sun lol cheap but not optimallly effective lol.

I wanted to post some pics of the plant as a whole (pics 1-2) and i think its going to be a female but my camera or the lighting sucks so i will have to wait till tomorrow morning to post some decent pics of that. and without further aiedu, tho plant lol

...and a pH meter of some sort?

The sun is fine as long as its getting the right about of uninterupted light and dark time. If you totally relied on the sun to do its thing your plant will still flower and give you bud but it will do it over a longer period of time than if you control the light and nutrient intake.

To me it looks tall enough that it needs to be switched to a flowering. What you will need to do is build an area where you can house your plant so that it can get 12 hours of uninterupted dark time.

Especially if you want to use a grow light it will need a secure place to grow in.

Check this clip out on Youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3yTUthBh0Q
Skip forward to 4 minutes (clip is 7:53sec long).

Although a lot larger and more elaborate than what you would need to correctly flower your plant, you can get a lot of ideas about the environment you want to create for your plant to live in, when its in a concealed space.

- Fresh air being cycled in and used air extracted out
- Lots of light
- Lots of oscillating fan movement
- Temporature control
- Knowing and controlling the humidity

Did you get a chance to watch that video clip on how to do your pH? If so what did you think of it?
