Breeding Your Own Strain...

How difficult is it really? I always see/hear people saying don't because you may weaken the genepool, it'd be hard to stabilize it, or just leave it to those trained, etc. But every now and then, I'll come on here and see someone who has bred their own strain, and it looks great.
I ask because there are 2 or 3 breeds and would love to bring together as one. I would think I would just cross those that exhibit traits I would like, then backcross with other plants within the same mix of three that further exhibit those traits.... however, I am a complete newb and would love to hear of other's facts/experiences on this....

It was pretty good... thanx
Plant breeding is serious business but marijuana makes it much easier since you can actually tell the difference between male and female plants.

If you ever do want to try it and have any measure of success I would say you need to read a book or 2 on genetics and specifically how plants pass down their genes.

Overall it takes lots and lots of time, discipline and probably money.

i do it each run to some extent

it isnt hard at all. theres just some things to keep in mind.

pot, like corn, has been domesticated and selectivly crossbred so many times that both crops are now
(im having trouble remebering the word, angeogenisis, heterogenisis... something like that)
anyway it breaks down to this
within reason when you cross hybridize weed or corn, they very often pick the best of each parent and are self strengthening.
BUT
(stick with me now)
if 2 Diff strains get hybridized, the offspring are generaly speaking the best of both worlds.
BUT
if you breed the same strain with itself, it tends to get its ancestors genes and quality drops.

fem'd seeds dont have that problem being closer to a clone than an offspring.

that is the extent of knowledg my brain damage is letting out right now.

pick up a book on animal husbandry, its not the same as botanical hybridization, but it will give you an idea of selective breeding and breeding for spacific traits.

heres what i do

i keep a coded log of each plant through its life cycle, heres some of the things i track.

this is during veg
1.leaf shape and length (i prefer early leaves with mutations and malformations, gimmie a decade and ill be able to grow this shit on my lawn)
2.avg distance between nodes (not too long, not too short)
3.growth vigor (fast, slow, stunted)
4.apearance
5.upkeep (never breed a plant that gave you alot of trouble)

during flowering
1. earliest flowering male (so they show up faster each generation)
2. time till begining of calyx formation
3. health/apearance
4. cyrstal formation
5. density

during smoking
all the usuals
