Generally you only need calmag if you're using RO water. A TDS meter, even for soil, is an excellent purchase. I use some of their pureblend grow and bloom and 4mls per gallon of either one is about as strong as I ever need to go. Without a meter, you can only feed and read and if that's your plan, start with 3mls of grow or bloom and 1 ml of LQ per gallon.

Pre packaged soil is loaded with nutes to begin with so take that into account. CNS 17 really should be posing no problems for you unless somehow you were really really over doing it, and you'd have to be doing something crazy to just really over do it with any phase of cns17. I use cns 17 grow through ripe, liquid karma, hygrozyme(ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS), raw sweet, botanicares organicare calplex(smell it and you will know that you want to use it), organic wet betty(foliage, some in the nutes every other week), hydroplex to help out in later weeks, handwatered silca blast every now and then(its awful mixed with your nutes, sludge in your feed lines) and I'm looking to fit organicare seaplex in most likely for foliage given the LK in the nute mix. Aerate you water, find a way of introducing co2(shoot for 1250ppm and you will see what 46 bux a week in co2 will do for your harvest.). Thats how and what I use with CNS17 as my base nute and i'm happy.

Also, unless you are mixing your own salts to build your own nutes then going by ppm alone will have you under doing it. Go by the labels, they were not scientifically formulated by idiots or hobbyists. I haven't had trouble with what the label has recommended yet. If you are going by ppm then get HydroBuddy, its a free program that is great and will welcome you to the world of ppms in a way it was meant for.
