Blueberry planted x 5 seedlings in mix of 25% pumice to 75% potting soil
2-4 weeks until planned cloning for sexing to ensue

02/01/2011
2:35am

No seeds popping up yet but that is to be expected seeing as how germination can take 3 to 5 days. I moved the humidity dome over the sides of the tray and my only concern is the soil drying out too quickly or possible diseases. Will check for the need to water tomorrow.

02/03/2011
4:09am

1 of the seedlings has germinated and is showing its 1st set of leaves. Seed was planted in the bottom right corner and I will call it seed "a".

Hopefully the remaining 4 seeds will germinate as well. 3.5 days since planting and my hopes were to have germination with 5 days.

02/06/2011
2:01am

1 of 5 seeds have germinated so far. Seedling leaves were drooping & showing signs of possible trauma & (or) dying. Moved the seedling into a 3 inch netpot w/3" insert to grow more roots. Put remaining 5 Blueberry seedlings into paper towel method tonight.

02/09/2011
9:53pm

Moved 2 sprouted seeds from paper towel to cloner. 1st seedling is showing 3rd set of leaves coming in & roots are coming along nicely!

02/11/2011
2:34am

Noticed the 2nd set of true leaves coming in on the 1st seedling to sprout. The leaves are yellow indicating a possible need for nutrients but the seedling is so young I'm afraid to nutrient it due to possible burn. Will check the PH tomorrow as I used plan tap water without ph adjusting it.

02/13/2011
3:48am

Finally checked the PH & definitely not a moment too soon! PH was over 6.6!!! I quickly added 4ml's of PH down & the last PH reading was 5.6! Will continue to monitor that. Because the pump has been on 24/7, the water temp was all the way up to 86 degrees!!! I put the pump on a timer of 5 seconds on & 1 minute or so off. This should help regulate the water temp. I'll continue monitoring the PH & nutrients to follow when the plants show their 3rd sets of leaves!

12:00am

Changed res from out of whack PH to 6.20 PH @ 76 degree water. The timer set at 1.5 minutes off & 5 seconds on really got the temperature down inside of the res. Leaves are still yellowing & I haven't started the plants on a nutrient cycle yet because I'm waiting for their 3rd set of true leaves to display before starting on The Lucas Formulas.

PH was above 6.20 AGAIN, put in 4ml of PH down & for just over 2 gallons of water this is turning into a real bitch to try and balance out with the tap waters inability to keep a stable buffer. Water temp is holding steady at 76 degrees after changing the spray timer and I got the PH back down to 5.79 per my PH Meter Combo Pen.[/B]

02/15/2011

12:43am

Dropped the PH level down to 4.68 after it steadily rose up to 6.30+ within 7 hours. I'm curious what (if any) kind of buffer the tap water of this god foresaken city actually has here. Leaves are still yellowing but roots are exploding and I can now see a 3rd set of leaves coming in even though the plant is looking pretty scorched.

8:52pm
PH was around 5.60 today around 4:30pm. Now at 8:51pm it's back up to PH was 5.9! I'm curious if I'll have to monitor the PH 2-4 times per day to keep it at somewhat of an even rate. 2nd set of true leaves are coming in at a very yellowed and brown spotted rate. Will definitely try starting the plants in soil next time & then moving into hydro.

02/16/2011

4:53pm

Water Temp 72 Degrees, PH 5.98, Plant 2 is definitely powering through! It's beginning to catch up to plant #1 but this could be because of the massive PH swings that have been ongoing for so long now. Hopefully plant #1 bounces back quickly. No leaves showing on plant #3 but the taproot is taking right off. Hopefully as the taproot develops the leaves will begin coming in expediently!

1:15pm

PH is holding steady at 5.90! Plants #1 & #2 are starting to get in their 3rd sets of leaves & should be ready for nutrients at 1/4 to 1/2 strength per the forums I've been reading online. I now know that for future reference the PH has to be as dialed into 5.80 as I can possibly manage it. Plant #3 is still developing a mean taproot & I firmly believe that once it does, it too will begin taking off The next time around for seed germination I will definitely be using Peat Cups w/Ocean Forest Soil from Fox Farm. After germinating and a couple of leaves are showing I will move the seedlings into a hydroponic setup to veg & pick my Mom plants. It appears I've made this 1 hell of a lot more complicated than it really needed to be.

02/18/2011

3:19am

PH measured out at 5.99! No callibration was done but leaves are definitely yellowing again. Tomorrow I'm going to hook the reverse osmosis system back up & try with RO water instead of tap. Leaves are yellowing on plants 1 & 2 again so it's time to start trying something new here.

PH was dialed in at 6.09 today at around 5:00pm, light green leaves are still appearing on plants #1 & #2. Very white and oxygen enriched taproot still coming in on plant #3 but I'm not sure if this seed is ever going to get it's head out. Still waiting for 3rd sets of leaves to come in before starting on nutrients w/"Lucas Formula". I also need to add nutrients to 1 gallon of water and figure out how long it takes for the water buffer to fall off.

7:19am

I just checked on Plant 1 & 2 during my journey to bed. That oscillating fan & moving the lights closer made a complete difference! The plants are both perking right up and I see the leaves possibly coming in at an extremely faster rate! Pictures & further updates to ensue!

5:53pm
Added 3ml of PH down in an attempt to get the PH as close to 5.80 as possible. Will monitor outome of doing this. Yellowing leaves could be a sign of salt build-up in the tank that I'm using. I did use a mild bleach solution and washed the bucket out thoroughly but according to the diagnosis in MJ Horticulture, it should be a sign that too much fert was used.

02/21/2011

2:47pm

I am wondering if indeed the yellowing of the leaves has to do with the PH or if in fact it is because of heavy chlorine content in the city water. I'm going to hook up my RO filter & see if this remedy the problem w/the yellowing of the leaves. I checked the PH and it shot down to 4.6 after adding the PH down last night. Plant #2 showed a dead spot on one of the new growth leaf but plant #1 is powering through. All new yellow growth is showing bright yellow leaves but since putting the oscillating fan at the level of the leaves, the new growth is coming in strong.

5:15pm
Put in 2 gallons of RO water & the PH was pushing well past 5.90+ so I believe this indicates that either there is residual chlorine leftover from having the non-RO water in the res or even RO water comes out with chlorine in it. I added 4 ml ml of PH down & will continue to monitor status. I noticed fresh green leaves growing in place of dead leaves on plant #1 & even though the new growth is heavily yellow it's still showing plenty of fresh growth.

11:53pm
PH dropped all the way down to 4.19 so I put in 2 ML of PH up to try and bring the PH levels back to where they need to be here. Will monitor tomorrow again.

02/23/2011

11:00pm

PH measured out at 6.28 after multiple instances of PH swings here. Starting on Lucas Formula @ roughly 1 ML per gallon Micro & 3 ML per gallon Bloom = Roughly 3 ML Micro & 8 ML Bloom, added 15ml of Hygrozyme & the PH was at 4.40. Held off on PH up because I think the PH is going to move up as the nutrients disolve.

11:41pm

PH adjusted from 6.60 to 5.73, roots on plant #1 appear to be turning a little bit brown. I thought the hygrozyme would eliminate that but if it continues I'll add h2o2 to clear up the potential root rot. Plant #2 is looking healthy but at the same time plant #1 is downright finicky as all get out.

6:25pm
Plant #1 1st set of roots have all browned over the past weeks time or so. Now there are healthy white roots growing from the brown roots that appeared to have started to rot. This is also walking hand in hand with greener leaves developing on the plant itself. The overall appearance is stunted BUT I think this has more to do with me not checking on the PH for the first weeks time or so because it really fucked up the growing. Plant #2 is shooting out of control and all of the decaying leaves are being trimmed off of both plants when the decay consumes more than 50% of the total leaf development. This is producing more accelerated growth in new leaf shoots & leaf development where leaves have already set in. The roots on plant #2 are HEALTHY, WHITE, & OXYGENATED! PH is going up to about 6.40 everyday but I offset this increase with around 1ml of PH down in the res which puts the PH down to 5.60-5.80 which is optimum for The Lucas Formula.

11:50pm
PH was dialed in at 6.10 or so, PH adjusted it back down toward 5.6 & figure it is going to rise overnight again. Plant #2 is doing awesomely now that I trimmed off the dead bits of leaves & foliage. New shoots are replacing dieback & a long strand of roots has now hit the nutrients allowing the plant to take right off. Plans to clean out the NFT system first thing tomorrow to get the ball rolling on prepping for flowering. Need to make a master plan on how to veg the plants in their own seperate system or continue to veg in the NFT system to produce future clones. Plant #1 is FINALLY beginning to come around with leaves turning greener while the yellowing edges are going away. White roots are shooting out but the overall growht has been severely stunted in comparison to plant #2. I believe this had to do with holding back nutrients for the time I did as well as major PH swings during the first week.

PH was dialed in at 5.91 so I left the PH as is & didn't adjust it. Roots are progressing nicely on plant #1 & it's greening out very well. Plant #2 just keeps adding more vigours growth each & everyday. Going to bump up to full strength LF nutrients very soon.

1# Maybe your tap water as chlorine and its burning them or maybe its the Ph try giving the water a 24h rest before using it or boil it let it cool down and use it!

# I am not sure about this cause i never did hidro, but i will, i think you shouldn't start them on dirt and then go hidro but start on rockwall cubes( i think thats what they're called)
and then putt it in a netted pot with some lava rocks those brown(clay) looking balls!
Sorry for my bad English
Good luck with your new born:)

I realized that later on, if you check the update info now you will see that I dropped the tap water & powered up my RO stat! My plants took off when I started using the RO & The Lucas Formula.

No problem on the English. This grow has been a definite learning experience & my biggest mistake was NOT using RO water from the get go. Had I stayed away from the tap water I know my plants would have suffered much much less. I was thinking about starting in soil because it was a great medium I could expose to light. It was my roommate who went forward with the paper towel method that worked a whole lot better.

PH was 5.98, dropped the new T5 light in & the added lumens appear to be boosting the plants right along! Roots are appearing to still be developing. Plenty of green, healthy white & oxygenated roots! Outstanding pictures & plant 1 is trying to make a come back to catch up to the growth spirts of plant #2.

8:27pm
PH 5.95, water temp 77 degrees, t5 HO warming red temp up a bit, pre-sex flowers are showing!!!! Added dual diaphragm air pump and it's coaxing the roots on plant 1 down to the water faster between that and the new light. Growth on plant 1 is still displaying a bit stunted but the new vegetation is super green & health. All roots are very white & healthy looking too. Still planning full strength nutes when the water level gets down to 2 gallons. PH is so rock solid I am very amazed.

03/06/2011

7:21pm

Upped to full strength on The Lucas Formula. PH was adjusted to 5.40 & I'm sure it will continue to drift upwards overnight. If plants begin to show too much stress I'll have to take the nutrients down to 3/4 strength. Plant 2 is still doing the best by far but plant 1 is steadily growing roots & trying to get them into the reservoir. Some light spots were beginning to show on plant 2 but I think this has more to do with nutrient deficiencies than anything else so I'll keep an eye on it & see if the spots go away.

03/07/2011

12:43am

Notice brown spots appearing on Plant #2 only & I think this was in part because I went so long without adding nutrients or at least increasing nutrients to full strength. The only leaves effected were on the old growth & nothing on the new. Will continue to monitor.

Thanks a lot, the plants haven't shown their sex yet but I'm praying plant #2 is female because of the bushiness & accelerated growth of that plant! Plant #1 is coming along very well so I'll be updating the journal again today, tonight, or in the early morning.

Using the RO & PH adjusted water definitely got the plants on a 180 degree direction from where they were as you can tell in the photos.

PH was at 6.19 & dialed that back down to 5.88 with 1ml of PH down. Topping off daily with full strength nutrients so I don't have to flush the system. Roots on Plant #1 are FINALLY catching up to Plant #2. Plant #2 shows slight nutrient burn on older growth leaves but I'm not concerned about it yet.

The upgrade to the SunBlaze 48 was the 2nd best decision I've made this entire grow with the exception of going to RO water.

So wait, you have nothing in the baskets? no clay pellets or anything? I'm so confused!!!
No sir, just neoprene inserts with the centers removed for now. I'll add some hydroton & remove the neoprenes when I drop the new Mom plant into it's own DWC system to veg endlessly. I'll reuse the neoprene for the next batch of seedlings and clones

PH was 6.18 so I added 1ml to the res after topping off with full strength nutrients + hygrozyme. Doing this settled the PH down to 5.73 with a water temp of 72.6 degrees Fahrenheit. These plants are beginning to get huge pretty fast & Plant #1 is finally making a come back but still shorter and not quite as bush as plant #2. Now that the roots on Plant #1 have hit the nutes in the res, the growth is betting more and more surreal.

Big move coming up within the next couple of days. Our roommate is moving out so I am going to convert the bedroom he is in into my grow room. I will have a veg, clone, and Mom plant setup in the closet & my 4.6 x 4.6 x 6.6 will be moved into the room for flowering. More details & photos as events warrant.

Thanks man, I really appreciate it & the rep if you were able to give it. You're right, these things are growing pretty crazy! I am definitely proud of what I've done so far. I think people realize that even if you begin to screw up, these plants are very forgiving as long as you catch your mistakes quickly enough & start babying them right away. :D

Thanks for the compliment duder. I hope Plant #2 doesn't have elephantiasis cuz that would make it a dood. I appreciate the kind words though cuz I'm just trying to catch up to where you are at now. :D

Hey Pete, what happened to this grow?
Those babies were sure looking pretty.

Your res temps are too high, should be 68 degrees F, need to get them down or you are at risk for root problems.
Maybe start by insulating the res with some reflective foam?
What brand or nutes are you using? You never said. I assume GH Flora series.
That stuff is buffered and should settle down very nicely if you are using RO water.
Make sure you are not adding them all together, but in the right order per instructions.
I have gotten conflicting advice about whether to PH adjust the water before adding the nutes, some say after, some say before.

Anyway, eager for an update.
Cheers!
