Bleaching bark

So I had this happen recently, not sure what to make of it:

My friend gave me two plants, which I added to my grow.

My grow is... half-assed at best? Haphazard? Low maintenance? Whatever... basically, minimal amount of attention being paid (cheap soil and nutes, straight tap water, under-lit, not enough air circulation, went well into veg, maybe even into flower before I checked ph, never checked ppm) as well as not so great conditions (very cold, very humid).

Despite that, all the plants have been doing well... actually really well if you consider all that... with the exception of those two plants.

They were a little further along than the rest (a week, maybe two), and totally different in how they were developed: I put mine into 3 gl pots right after sprouting... these had gone all the way to sexing in solo cups, and someone had some plan, because they have removed one of each set of leaves going up the stalk, which was super thin and gangly compared to mine. I planted them into 3 gal pots and treated them same as the rest. They did very well... filled out some, but still stayed skinnier and less bushy than my others (which had tons of nice big leaves). Totally great and healthy looking though.

I finally check my water and soil PH at late veg/early flower and found it to be alkali... the water slightly, the soil VERY.

So I made an acid mix and watered with that.

At about that point one of those plants died. All the stems, from the main trunk out to the branches had lost all chlorophyll and turned a slightly yellow white... the color of roots or the inner stem. The leaves seemed to dry up (totally wilted, don't recall if they were crackling). The buds never seemed to get affected... they stayed green and spongy/moist/sticky... but figuring the plant was on unsalvageable decline... that was that. after two days like that I decided to chop it. It was only just flowering so I only got about an 1/8 of dried bud that just tasted like grass to me (though I cured and gave some to my buddy who smokes a lot less than I do, and it got him high).

Despite the fact that I used the same acid water on all the plants and this was the only one to show any problems, I figured I may have burned the roots with the acid, so I watered all the plants with regular water just in case.

Around a week later I noticed the same thing happening to one branch on the other plant I was gifted. Because it was only on a part, I could see that it was the length of the tubes going up inside the bark that were losing their color... it looked streaky... a few still had varying degrees of color, more so near the trunk, but became white as they reached the bud site. I chopped off the offending limb, dried and smoked it (it was much better) and now 3 weeks later the plant has shown no other signs of problems.

I have no idea what happened or why... I can't even tell if whatever was happening was moving up or down the plant... I've never seen anything quite like this.

Thoughts? (Aside from the obvious changes to my whole set up, which yes, could be infinitely improved upon in every way, not the point though... in fact, you can think of my grow as a bit of an experiment on how hearty cannabis is and how it will still produce damned good results in less than ideal conditions).

Sorry, no pics, I took some but my memory card crapped out.

So, in a general sense an "acid mix" would be anything you use to help acidify the soil.

For example, you might top dress with a compost mix that is high in acid (coffee grounds). As you water and it breaks down the acid gets into the soil.

Ex.: Blueberries like acid soil... many growers use (all kinds of) solvent formulas to acidify their soil, because as the plant grows the soil becomes more alkali. Something as simple as vinegar (acetic acid) and water can work. Most blueberry growers use heavier acids, like sulphuric or phosporic.

So yeah, that's an acid mix. Something that comes in handy when your Ph is off balance... (mine was as alkali as my meter could read, 8 ).
