I've recently been making my bho extractions with different starting materials to see how this effects the outcome of the runs, both in quantity of oil obtained and the color, texture, taste and smell. Here is what I have found:
From Left to Right: Dry seived keif run, high quality colas, lower buds, and trim.
By far from a yield perspective the dry seived keif run was the most successful. From one packed tube and one can of butane I yielded around 14 grams of BHO. As the butane began to run out the bottom of the tube It did a strange thing I have never seen before, the butane ejected from the tube at the very beginning came out in almost a foam (it reminded me of a mountain dew slurpy) I think this may be because the butane was nearing its saturation point but I don't know. The oil came out much darker than ether of the bud runs and was nearly the same color as the trim run and has a very hashy taste (surprise surprise)
The High Quality nug run oil was the lightest in color, when spread across the pyrex dish initially it was almost clear. Taste and smell are out of this world, by far the best the oil tastes and smells remarkably like the bud it came from. Yield from one can of butane 5 grams.
The lower nug run was slightly darker and slightly less aromatic than the upper bud run but still very tasty yield 4 grams
Trim run, standard trim oil, dark, not the most flavorful but as with all oil Knocks you on your ass. yield 2 grams.
Note about Potency: Now maybe I don't have the refined cannabis sensors that everyone else seems to have but I find the potency of the oil doesn't change nearly as much as the flavor and color. That is a dab of the nug run seems to get me as high as a dab of the trim run, but the nug run of course tastes and smells much better.
