Obama: Too much debt could fuel double-dip recession

Wed Nov 18, 2009 6:14am EST

BEIJING, Nov 18 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama gave his sternest warning yet about the need to contain rising U.S. deficits, saying on Wednesday that if government debt were to pile up too much, it could lead to a double-dip recession.

With the U.S. unemployment rate at 10.2 percent, Obama told Fox News his
administration faces a delicate balance of trying to boost the economy and spur job creation while putting the economy on a path toward long-term deficit reduction.

His administration was considering ways to accelerate economic growth, with tax measures among the options to give companies incentives to hire, Obama said in the interview with Fox conducted in Beijing during his nine-day trip to Asia.

"It is important though to recognize if we keep on adding to the debt, even in the midst of this recovery, that at some point, people could lose confidence in the U.S. economy in a way that could actually lead to a double-dip recession," he said.

Fox News, which released a transcript of the interview, showed that comment by Obama on Wednesday morning and said the full discussion would be broadcast later in the day. (Reporting by Caren Bohan; Editing by John O'Callaghan)

Bush started it... and his adm. allowed the problem to get so bad... but hey...better to have a bailout debt saving rich people, than poor or jobs..

we did not have a collapsing economy untill the last 3 months of the bush presidency and I garanfuckin T he would not have issued a huge tax cut in such conditions when we did not have the money to cover it. we we did the tax cuts the economy was ok and got better because of it

the huge tax cut is most likely what kept our economy going for so long through the attacks on sept 11 and all the dips we had

the cuase the economy collapsed is because greedy polititions in congress forced & encouraged the banks to lend to people who could not afford them

typical stupid liberal thinking without thinking of the concequances of thier actions. even your "friend" President bush spoke to congress about these lending practices and told them to reform the laws so he could sign it, but they did not listen to him

obama didnt stimulate any jobs he just squandered $800,000,000,000 of our money and gave it out to all the regions and disctricts and special interests that helped get him elected and now they are putting out false jobs saved information to cover it up while our real unemplyment rate is now at 17.5% if you count every single jobless rate

you should check out all these facts. its all true, i hate to burst your bubble

now for the cherry on top he has been trying to ram through congress the cap n trade bill and a huge healthcare bill that will end up consuming more then 20% of our total economy

they say this is so important because its for the uninsured but by thier own admission there would still be 12 million unisured even after this shit ball passes

the only reason they wanna pass it is to gain power over us

wake up america they are destroying your country.

i hate this man you they call obama. and people need to wake up.

thanks choda i may have been a bush supporter but i am also an america supporter and a president supporter cuz im a loyal patriot but obama is a huge disapointment. its one thing to do his liberal agenda which is fair and square as he won the election but he has no right to destroy our country

what i cant figure out is if he is doing it on purpose or if he is really just that dense or sheltered by his yes men?

we still have to wait 12 more months to purge the congress of these greedy traitors to thier oath and tie obamas hands until the last day of his first and only term

The debt being caused by the current spending spree is a drop in the bucket compared to the future account deficit being faced by medicare and medicaid. So many of the baby boomers will be retiring in the coming years. All of those people have be promised medicare and medicaid coverage yet the the government made no provisions or plans on how to pay for it. It will bankrupt us.

Right now the only thing holding this country together is artificially low interest rates. The Fed can only keep them low for so long. What is going to happen to the housing markets when mortgage rates are determined by the market? I expect housing to drop another 20% over the next 5 years.

somthing needs to be done and i hate to say it this health shit is not sustainable.

either you cut all the spending or its all stops anyway due to the collapse of a nation

i think the better choice is to cut everything

if they tax the rich the rich will move thier assets to other nations and this will compound the money shortfalls

just like in cali the companies are fleeing the state like rats on a sinking ship.

they keep loseing more and more money cuz they keep over taxing and thereby loseing tax payers.

new york is next

get all the illigals out of cali. sorry if your mexican but i dont wanna live in the "new" new mexico which will be called america and then all the broke starving americans will be crossing the border into canada:wall:

our leaders have all failed us we may be doomed.

we will see the collapse before we die. if they dont end most of the fat off these socialist progams that are failing. and have been failing for decades

Wow now Obama is worried about deficits???
What is wrong with this guy?

Schizophrenia seems to be his malady.

And we are all going to suffer the consequences of his profligate, maniacal spending!

We need an intervention asap!

Geeze, talk about an Obama pile on. This confirms my suspicions that this site is trending right, maybe it is too late to save it and it will just be a repuke talking points forum, like Faux "News". Obama was handed this pile of puke and he is trying to fix it. Any of you that think giving 1.5 trillion to the rich and then starting 2 fucking wars had nothing to do with this may need brain surgery, basically to see if there is a brain inside that empty skull.

You better get it done quick, before this fascist cabal going under the alias "the Obama administration" takes over the medical field. Pretty soon it's back to chewing on willow bark for a brain tumor...

Hey med I guess you think Bush made him spend all of this additional money.
Obama is the one who is creating deficits of historically gigantic proportions.

It is entirely this economic whiz Kid alone who is conducting this irresponsible reckless spending binge.
Obama is making a drunken Sailor look frugal.

It was bushs lack of controls put on wall street when he was warned two years before the crisis... but like bum buddies he watched out for his own so don't even try that fucking crap..bush was warned by his own people. but his handlers kept him quiet. that or he didn't care. he's well off. what with the families Bin Laden money.

Yeah Bush was part of the problem, however, Obama is definitely not helping, you are an idiot if you think he is going to help the country or economy. Democrats in the administration are part of the problem as well. For instance, Barney Frank said: "These two entities- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac- are not facing any kind of financial crisis" sep 11 2003, "Fannie and Freddie are fundamentally sound, they are not in danger of going under... I do think their prospects going forward are very solid" July 14 2008, "The more people, in my judgement, exaggerate a threat of safety and soundness, the more people conjure up the possibility os serious financial losses to the treasury, which i do not see." There are many more stupid quotes from democrats and barney and republicans. The blame everything all on bush alone argument does not work.

The idea that deregulation caused the financial crisis is ridiculous. And I am so fucken sick of being told 'well it's bush's fault we're in this mess' every time Obama's policies are called into question. Yes, I understand Obama inherited this mess, not created it...that doesn't change the fact that he is making all the wrong moves and steering us toward financial armageddon.

Bush is not president anymore people, lets try to focus here.

You don't get it. It doesn't matter that Bush got us into this. Obama is continuing it and then some by spending so much. Let America recover on its own, don't double its cash circulation with a printer. It just lowers everyone's total wealth.

If you wouldn't go after a group that attacked your nation then you would be the world's worst president when it comes to national security.

The war WAS necessary. End of story.

Say we sat back and did nothing. We may have an economy but at the cost of many innocent lives. How can you let a national security threat of that scale slide?

Any president would have done the same thing. It's his duty to protect the American people and you know this.

Human life is more valuable to me than the economy. Does that mean I am for universal health care? Fuck no. If you don't got the money, that doesn't mean other people should pay for you. Someone can die in the street and I won't lose a second of sleep over it if the person wasn't making the effort to survive.

Any human without deficiencies who can remain present in this world can survive.

All this is is fully grown (likely just physically) adults crying for their mommies to take care of them. Even if the government gave out money, I'd feel like shit taking it.

Taking ANYTHING makes you feel guilty and more dependent. Earning ANYTHING feels rewarding and increases confidence and independence.

People in general spend too much time on the past. Generally the negative aspects of the past. Anytime you are thinking about the past, you are suffering, for you are spending internal energies on the uncontrollable.

Learn lessons from the past and begin everything with the future in mind, but let your focus be dominated by the present.
