I keep my hydro ton in a 5 gallon bucket of PH5.5 water. Change the water every couple weeks gradually washes all the grit out of it. After a harvest just wash it in hot water and throw it in the bucket with the rest. Also add some 35% H2o2 to the water to kill badies.

Get a five gallon bucket with lid.
Drill 1/4" holes in the sides of the bucket and in the lid, then drill a hole in the lid big enough for a garden hose to fit in.

Put in the hydroton, close the lid, put the hose thru lid, and turn on the water. The small roots and built up nutes will wash right out. Don't wash too much at once - you want the hydroton to swirl around.

You can try mixing foodgrade peroxide with water at 1 tsp. per gallon and soak them for an hour then rinse good with hot water. should take care of it.

I place my used hydroton in a large stainless steel pot and add water and bring it to a boil for 10 minutes..... When it is cool, I dump it in a 5 gal bucket that has 5/16" holes drilled in the bottom for drainage.... I then spread them out in a large flat under bed type storage tote and let them bake in the sun a day or two, to ensure they are completely dry for storage. If I have other plants waiting on hydroton, I re-use after the boil and rinse.

That is a lot. Hire some Mexicans to scrub it wash and dry?;) Sounds as though you need 55 gallon barrels. Consider STG Hail for future grows?

Hell yea I am going with STG next round for sure, after seeing all the info it's dumb not to try it. I've used hydroton and I hate it. And i'm sure you know this but no, do not put it in your washing machine....rofl...

And no there isn't a simple way, it's a bitch, I only had about 50L to do, and THAT sucked.

I swore to not reuse my hydroton after washing them new. I hate all the dust that I keep cleaning out on the bottom of my buckets.
I agree, I'm using perlite now and it's even a bit dirty for my liking. I'll be giving STG a shot in a couple months, I've never used it so I can't recommend it 100% but it sure looks too good to pass up trying.

Ive boiled it if it was really nasty, other wise soak it it a 5 gallon bucket warm water then add hydrogen peroxide, then agitate the bucket till the stones look good. Rinse and ready...

I think growdan is a better option than sure to grow just seen to many issues with it.
as for boiling it ive got a deep fried turkey cooker, I think that best I could do 30L at a
time, fucking gay!!!

i tried to wash it with hydrogen peroxide- nada. small amount of bleach- nanda just a bad smell, milllions and millions of boiling water- nada, now my old hydroton goes out itno my garden and becomes useful in other ways- like helping my vegetables and herbs that grow in soil- its wicked to help drainage and stuff. after all that palava i just bought a feckin MASSIVE bag of hydroton (it was ph neutral too (score!)). I understand that that may seem wasteful to some but it always gets reused and actually my garden outside is growing much happier since i mixed in the hydroton. not the best answer you were looking for but trust me bro its fucking LONG cleaning hydroton!
