CFL + t5 lights are good for small grows and vegging. Low heat, but low energy efficiency and relatively pricey per watt, as well.
Alot of people have found ways to get some good looking dope flowering with CFL.

LED lights seem to work from posts, alot of good tests going on and if I could id buy some and test em out for myself, but the $$$ is crazy. Alot of cheaper LED lights on the market arent that good, made in china

I just traded for a 400w switchable ballast with cool metal hallide, as well as hortilux hps. I have read a few threads on the subject and if you were to want a larger amount of watts its definately easier, as well as cheaper startup cost to get a HID lamp.

so basically, if ive got this right. compact flourescents are very bright (assuming they are the correct color spectrum) but alot of energy is "used" for a less intense light. If you load a cabinet with 400ws of CFL or T5 I dont think the light will be as intense as HPS or MH HID lamp. Less intense light = less lower growth due to inadequate canopy penetration... but that is pretty general

its kind of a balance between what you want from your grow.
