Yeah JG, I had - until I saw my payslip from last month! There's much cheaper options and unfortunately that is a a factor atm...
However, Im having a headache finding the cob holders from anywhere else except mouser (and similar places) with the free shipping above €30, and as these places also stock the HLG drivers I might just go for it...ive been faffing around too long! But what do you think about getting the 700mA? I did just write my thinking here, but i just deleted it as its clear I know nothing about dimmer function and what exactly it does ;) Would there be any advantage of the 700 dimmable driver? This one to be exact: http://www.mouser.at/ProductDetail/Mean-Well/HLG-60H-C700A/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMt5PRBMPTWcaRSJ5hpJAfwro1t31kMdKXM=
Thanks for the heatsink advice Will, ill look for something with better heat dissipation.
Cheers guys!

Well my friend, the 700ma wouldn't work unless you stepped up to a 100W driver and some beefier heatsinks. You can certainly use a cheaper driver, just make sure it's over 50W and 350ma constant current.

You'll be able to dim down to 10% on the HLG, and the reason that's useful is if you want to go from seedling to flower it can be nice to adjust the light, and in a short cabinet where you can't raise the lights, if you run out of height dimming is about all the control you have.

Cheers JG, yes hopefully the dimming will be worth it. As there'll only be one little, lonely chick in my cab I guess full light output wont be necessary from the off!
Im going with the heatsinks Dionysis recommended - https://www.fasttech.com/p/1348405 I can cut these in half giving a 50 x 50 x 30 unit, fingers crossed that should be enough...but i was thinking earlier, is there data about the running temps of the leds, at different currents? I had a look on a few datasheets but couldnt find anything (or rather, I couldnt find anything that made sense!)
Right, all ordered: leds, driver, cables (18awg - i think thats ok?), holders, http://www.mouser.at/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=2213407-1virtualkey57100000virtualkey571-2213407-1 and stuff for my bubble bucket (PH, EC meters and so on).
Will, to be honest Ive not really given much thought to venting/odour control yet. I recall seeing some fairly staight forward diy carbon scrubbers and as the size of my cab is so tiny im hoping a solution will be fairly simple and inexpensive (yeah right, thats how things always pan out eh?)
So now the waiting begins...Fasttech shipping generally a month or so :/
Many thanks again, youve all been extremely helpful, really appreciate it!!
Cheers :)

Damn those holder prices made my eyes water.

Is that one heatsink per cob, 50x50? You will need a good fan on each one.

Actually I guess I should explain a little further...you need to worry about heat watts, not so much temperature at currents...So basically you have a cob running at 12W like yours will be, lets say that's 50% efficient, so 50% light and 50% heat. So you'll need to dissipate about 6W of heat per cob.

The way your bog standard extruded heatsink is judged is by surface area. The general recommendations around here are 120cm2 per watt for passive, 40cm2 per watt for active cooling. Cob manufacturers recommend WAY less, but those recommendations are based on running at pretty blazing temps.

Anyway, those heatsinks you chose are good for maybe 4W passive, they are the opposite of overkill. They'll need fans, but should work fine.

Naw your math is right, but that is driver efficiency, not cob efficiency.

Honestly about any cooler with a dedicated fan will be able to cool your 6W.

Cheers JG, i'll look into that a bit more. Just out of curiosity, what (similar) efficiency % are people with the big 3590 builds aiming for?
Thanks!

Hiya JG,
Thanks, thats good to know.
I appreciate all your help here, everyone, Will, JG, Gowmau5, many thanks. So now the waiting begins! I have some outdoor stuff to keep me busy, need to order the beans for that. And I have a design for another light which im working through - its a bit OTT but I love designing and building stuff.
Oh and need to finish this dude :)

Hey guys,
Hope youre all keeping well! CXA2530s should be here any day now but man, having a right headache trying to get heatsinks on a budget (really chose the wrong time to start a grow as im flat-out skint at the mo!)
How do you reckon this would cope with the 2530 @ 350mA...passively...?

Is there sufficient space to mount the cob on the plate? In my most humble opinion it seems too small for passive. Shiva we are on the same quest. Leddna seems to have decently priced items.

Yeah Mazar but its $10 delivery and your probably looking at 3 weeks delivery time...googling brought me to these pin fin units which seem reasonably priced, probably perform very well and yes a €10 but id expect shipping times to be fairly good: https://www.elpro.org/gb/led-heat-sinks/41922-lpf50a50-5-b.html ...might be a good compromise. But I think you want to mount multiple leds on a long heatsink so yes some of the ledna units might be more suitable for you.
Urghh...its a flippin' headache eh? :)
