BCNL Producer meets SCROG meets Grape Krush by DJ Short

Ewiggin requested some commentary on the building of the PVC screen so here it is!

The directions that deacmaster had included a bunch of 2" pieces of PVC to act as joints. Without the directions I didn't want to attempt that myself. There might be some advantage to his system that I don't see but mine seems to function just fine.*

The first problem I encountered was the size of the door being shorter in width than the inside of the box. You can see in the photo below that my screen is longer than the door.*

*I wanted a screen that would utilize every square inch of interior space as these boxes aren't huge. Given that the fully assembled screen is 10" tall I couldn't insert it through the door at an angle. It took me way too long to figure out that I should build the base and top screen separately and leave the 4 legs unsecured and unattached. That way I could insert the base at an angle and place it in the box. Then stick the 4 legs on it. Then insert the top screen at an angle and attach. The other advantage of unsecured legs is that I can use different length legs to lower or raise the screen if I want. This is especially helpful in a box that doesn't allow for the lights to be lowered. Different strains will need varying amounts of room and I know you mentioned that you want to try different strains.

I positioned the legs differently than deacmaster because this screen is for the Producer. I moved them inwards to make room to work in the front corners of the box.*

After all my planning, thinking and measuring I did make a mistake that I might correct after this grow. One of my legs is partially blocking the intake fan.*

Every time I look at it I get irritated. If it bugs me enough I'm going to build a new one. If I do that I will do a full step-by-step video with measurements of everything for all the Producer growers who might be interested in scrogging their box.*

Thanks for sharing all of this insight! I most definitely want to implement one of these in my box. I enjoyed the part where you talk about making it adjustable depending on what strain you're growing. I've been making a list of the rare and delicious strains that I've never tried, but always wanted to. It'll be so fun to experiment in the grows to come.

I feel like there needs to be a better place for BCNL box users to congregate and share little mods like this. Googling around a little bit has shown me that BCNL has crowd sourced the growing communities in the past for ways they could improve these boxes. And I'm sure that has helped lead to some of the improvements they've made to their lineup over the years. And now that I really think about it... I'm really not sure why they don't offer their own SCRoG kit!

My point is that although I openly admit to being very new to this hobby and botany in general, it's obvious there are things people are doing to their boxes to consistently improve yields.

Your idea for a step-by-step video would be really awesome. If you're building another one, I might have to try and convince you to cut the pieces for two!

I asked one of the reps about that. He said that if they were to sell their own it would have to be a professional quality and the purchase price would be too high. I see a few things wrong with that;

1. The people that buy these things have already gotten over the sticker shock from the price of these things. Their demographic is one of the best suited for marketing an accessory like this to. An extra $300 probably won't phase them.

2. A nice PVC set-up looks pretty professional and the materials retail for $50 (plus labour). It took me 1.5 days of puttering around to get mine done but it was my first one, I wasn't using the best tools and I'd purchased some incorrect parts. If I was building my tenth one in a workshop it would take 1.5 hours. If they matched the colour of the PVC to the plastic used in the box it would look really slick.

3. Even if pre-made screens weren't a massive profit centre, they still would add to the "plug and play" sales pitch that BCNL employs. Part of the reason I got one of these is that I didn't want to have to make a bunch of trips to Home Depot like I did for my last grow that's built from the ground up.

Some of the fan leaves are starting t get to be a good size. You can see a bit of the residual damage from the mag deficiency on this one.

It's quite difficult to take a well focused shot through a screen when using an iPhone. It always wants to focus on the screen. I've got a digital SLR, I think I'll start using that for photos.

My bushiest plant. I'm still a few plants shy of my 10 allowed so I'll probably take a clone or two from this one for the next round.

I've got two that are this size

Then there is this one. I'd written her off as dead during cloning but she finally showed some roots. She was maybe 3 days behind the other ones. She has barely grown and her root system is a fraction of what the others have.

Do I kill her off? I don't even know if she will reach the screen in time, let alone branch out.

We've breached the screen!!!

I was very happy to see that this morning. This is my first scrog and I'm pretty excited to try my hand at horizontal training.*

I waited too long to top twice but the lateral growth on these plants is impressive. *I will have numerous tops to train across the screen and fill it up.*

I went away for the weekend and came back to find several branches with nice growth through the screen.

I then tucked them all back under the screen.

The iPhone has a new panoramic photo feature.

Th girls are going through way more of the reservoir over the course of a week. When I add PH to a diminished res, it takes far less drops to balance it. I figured that out when I shot past 5.6 all the way to 4.8. I had to use baking soda to bring it back up a touch. Good thing I'm changing the res tomorrow night.

The plants are trucking along and filling up the screen.

Last night I got home and one of my new MH bulbs was out. I switched in an HPS bulb and turned the machine back on. Only the one side lit up. Crap. I get on the phone with the guys from BCNL. They tell me to check the ballast connections and if they are all secure but not working they will send me a new ballast. I go back downstairs and lo and behold, the room is full of glorious orange light from the HPS. I feel stupid for calling BCNL but hey, that's what they're their for. I think I'm almost done vegging so I'm just going to stick with one HPS and one MH for the short time left before 12/12.

And a panorama

A question for the experienced scroggers. Is it time to flip to 12/12? I am a scroglodyte.

No it doesn't. I was having a hard enough time justifying the cost as it was. I didn't even look at upgrades. Now that I'm PH balancing the water twice a day I wish I had.

Ph'ing twice a day in hydro is too much. You should be ph minimum every 2 to 3 days. What's your ph going up to?

I'm switching to flower tonight. As I mentioned before I'm going with an 11 hours of light schedule as DJ Short himself said his strains react well to it.

I'm mostly guessing that this is the right time to flip the switch as I've never grown this strain or done a Scrog.

I will settle it at 5.7 in the morning. 18 hours later it will be at 6.3.
Looked at the nutes from bcnl website that you are using. Looks like they did away from using adv nutes and went with there own brand or another. I have never heard of the brand that they are using. Are you using tap or r/o water?

I took 3 clones from my one plant that dwarfed the others in size. I couldn't put them in my cabinet because they just got flipped to 12/12. I can't fit the clone tray and dome in my little tent. So here is my solution. Two clear plastic cups.

Here is 3 of then tucked in my tent.

Day 4 of flower

Panorama

There is a space between the rear wall and the edge of my screen. Several tops have grown into it.

I'm debating what to do. I can tuck them back under the screen which makes the most sense but a few are in areas that have more than enough growth to fill each square. I was thinking that I might just let a few of them go and try supercropping to keep them level with the canopy. It is only a small space but it would be nice to fill it with some colas.

We have our first flower! This photo is from Day 5.

Having trouble seeing it?

Still having trouble?

That should be clear now......or maybe we could enhance a little more

A clear as day now......

I think I can almost see it.....

Too close!
