Congressional Bill To Legalize Marijuana To Be Introduced
Published on June 22nd, 2011
Written by: Joe
A group of United States Representatives are set to introduce a momentous bill in Congress tomorrow that would allow states a free hand to legalize marijuana if they so wish, without federal interference. The bill would limit the federal government’s role in cannabis to to cross-border or inter-state smuggling and allow anyone to grow, sell, and possess marijuana in states where it is legal.

Barney Frank
The main sponsors of the legislation are Massachusetts Representative Barney Frank (D) and Texas Representative Ron Paul (R), with initial co-sponsors including Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN), Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO).

The legislation coincides with the recent 40th anniversary of President Richard Nixon’s declaration of The War on The Drugs, which has created a general firestorm of bad press for the four-decade old failed policy, as well as a recent report from The Global Commission on Drug Policy’s report on the abject failure of the drug war.

Barney Frank is less than a good guy. The current economic condition was his fault along with Chris Dodd, so excuse me if I dont play along with the Barney Frank good Guy title.
He is looking to legalize marijuana so the big tobacco companies can start growing and selling marijuana. You guys need to do some homework before you start getting excited. Check out who is on Barney Franks donor list? Which companies have given the most money to BF? Where is BF going to work after he loses is reelection bid in 2012? BIG TOBACCO

No offense taken JC and thanks for the insight. The way I read it was they're going to leave to the states. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to screw it up for the people so a few can get fat, but it seems to me this could help out with most of the problems I see in the courts. Regardless I'm afraid we know how far this will go, it was just refreshing to see an effort, even a futile effort, that is pushing in that direction.

No one would buy a candy bar if it tasted like shit... so why do we accept the choices we are giving when it comes to politicians? If we do not like something we should make it loud and clear.

whimpers do nothing because it is a sound made from the weak.... we need to yell for mpeople like you and me to run.

I tell you when big money got involved in the campaign process we lost a piece of America.

I'm with you on Barney Frank. I think he is one of the worst politicians out there especially from the dodd/frank fiasco. But I also respect Ron Paul. His endorsement pulls a lot of weight right now in the political arena. And the legislation would leave it up to the states if they want to legalize or not, similar to the repeal of alcohol prohibition. Not all states legalized alcohol after it was repealed, I beleive Kansas was dry until around 1987 or something like that, unless you belonged to a private club and payed a fee i think. But I could be mistaken on that date.

I agree with you that Barney Frank is less than a good guy. But to blame the economic condition of the country on two people is totally wrong. What about the lenders giving money to people without verifing income and the people who took those mortgages they couldn't afford. I'm not saying Frank and Dodd didn't play a role but the blame spreads much futher than that.

Barney Frank is one of the lesser evils in the political arena. He has a voting record that I consider positive, compared to other politicians. Personally, I think he's making steps in the right direction.

Also, I wouldn't hold him responsible for our economic turmoil. The true responsibility is with the Federal Reserve, a system that Barney Frank was extremely critical of (but essentially powerless to change). If there's any face that could be put on our recession, it'd be Ben Bernanke's.

No disrespect intended, just voicing my opinion. :D

Sheep I think it was you who mentioned this would be the first step for big biz to get on. I'll be honest, I haven't thought about a whole lot, but a side from the big budget, I don't know that I'd be worried. I'm sure that someone can point out to me where the threat lies. My feelings are that a caregiver is going to provide services that won't be paralleled by a faceless corporation. I would have my doubts as to quality and cost. Even if chips ahoy puts a gooey fudge center in their soft n chewy cookies, they'll never be as good as the ones grandma made for you as a child. And I feel this is the same type of situation so.....somebody enlighten me. Is this going to be a battle of you can do it cheaper? For me it's all about craftsmanship. Firm believer that you get what you pay for and I guess I have my doubts that a large op would be able to match the level of commitment that an individual will pride themselves on. Then again money can make a lot of things happen, but let's hear some thoughts about this from others.

I have no doubts that large corporations and big business will get in on this, it is their right. But what they will become is your low qaulity, cheap, mass produced, 1-flavor market. Basically they will take over for the Mexican Brick Weed cartels. There will still be a market, especially for conniseurs(?), who are looking for the good quality, moderately priced, and well taken care of buds.

Basically the corporations would become your Natural Light and Bud Lights. Then the quality buds would be similar to craft brews like Oberon and Blue Moon. Yet still people would grow their own to their own satisfaction, just like home brewers.

You are correct when corporations won't be able to provide the same kind of service that small operators can, but that is true with virtually every industry. Can Walmart provide the customized service that a Mom and Pop store can? No. Can Geico or Progressive offer the same service as a local independent agent? No. Can Delta Airlines provide the quality service of a charter aircraft? No. So basically, they will only be competeing on price, not quality. And that is precisely where us small timers can find a niche, produce a good and service, and stay in business despite large corporations. But is has to be focused on customer service and quality, that is what seperates us.

I thought that's what a good caregiver is trying to do, or at least it's my perspective....help some people out. So, yeah you're probably right, I imagined they'd lean towards hash and concentrates to skirt the quality issue. Only thing wouldn't Michigan have to reform it's current law to allow for a mega op? I would like to think the guidelines wouldn't be completely corrupted for the sake of a dollar.

all the big cigarette companies have owned land in Cali's Triangle for years, and yeah their flavors would most likely resemble their generic cigarettes and cheap swill they call ale.

As long as H.R. 2306, the Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act passes, I don't care who jumps in the game.
Craftmanship and quality have always been appreciated in all fields, otherwise micro-breweries wouldn't be popping up everywhere 75+ years after the prohibition of alcohol.
Nothing is gonna change except the law :leaf:

Barney frank and Chris Dodd told the lending institutions to lend the less than worthy, more money than they could pay back.
The lenders have a part to play ikn this as well but the ball started rolling with Frank/Dodd.
