Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge hit by cargo ship

Enough that the entire port is closed off, and 800 more incoming cargo ships are being re directed elswhere. I don't see why they couldn't clear one area out, and be right back in business in days as far as shipments go.
They were trying to recover the bodies of the people in the cars, six people still missing at 5 minutes ago. Then they have to get a crane to move the damaged portions out of the way. Is the paved section of the span in the way of ships? How do you cut it up into cane happy pieces? I think it might take a while. Not like they have a plan ready to remove the bridge.

Yeah I just realized that.. They could tug it out of the way like nothing though. I'm sure the families would want a full investigation, and they can't exactly do much about the bridge with all the marine traffic in the way.

So lets pretend for a minute that those flashes across the bridge were sequenced thermite charges, and the whole thing was some kind of an inside job. They even let the traffic through first so it was all clear. The pot hole guys in trucks on the bridge were actually secret agent demolition techs, and they escaped on a raft minutes before the event after setting up.. And cleared any evidence at 2-3 AM when it was still dark. Why would they want to redirect all the huge cargo ships down through other countries, and then over to the west coast again? What if they were actually doing it to protect us from whatever could be in all those containers on the way?

Ukraine did it. Ask Putin.

You appear to have an affinity for conspiracy hypotheses.

What you describe is far less likely than “an undermaintained ship lost power and bumbled into a bridge support not designed to take that much momentum.”

Also lacking in any good conspiracy narrative is “cui bono?” Who benefits if this were indeed deliberate?

The only way to answer other than “nobody really” is to engage the Cumulative Improbability Drive. One needs to start stacking implausible premises to build any sort of case at all.

I understand that conspiracies are tasty, but sometimes “stupid shit happened” is the choice endorsed by Occam’s Chainsaw.

There you go, Ukraine did it. According to Russia.

The captain of the container ship that rammed a bridge in Baltimore, blocking the port, is a citizen of Ukraine
Information continues to come in after the incident in Baltimore, America. As already reported in one of News "Military Review", a container ship crashed into a pillar of a more than 2-kilometer bridge, causing the central part of the bridge to collapse like a house of cards in just a few seconds. At least 5 cars that were on the bridge at that moment went under water. American rescuers and divers were busy searching all day.

The American press reports that six people are currently missing. Among them are builders who performed technical work on the bridge. However, state authorities say they do not know exactly how many construction workers were on the bridge.

It is also reported that the captain of the Dali container ship, sailing under the flag of Singapore, is a citizen of Ukraine. Only his name is called - Sergei.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge is one of Baltimore's main transportation arteries. Interstate 695 ran along it - over the Patapsco River.

The FBI, a few hours after the incident, said that the bridge collapse “is not the result of sabotage or a terrorist attack.”

A few minutes before the collision with the bridge support, the crew of the container ship reported that they had lost control. There were electrical problems. They warned us. This is not a terrorist attack.

At the same time, neither the shipowner Synergy Group nor the FBI are talking about why control was lost just before passing under the bridge.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore said that "the entire country is shocked by what happened." According to him, “there was an accident” and “it’s unlikely to be a terrorist attack.”

At the same time, it became known that the port of Baltimore was blocked by metal structures of the collapsed bridge, and for several months. Moreover, the situation is aggravated by the container ship itself, which remains under the metal parts of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

For reference, the port of Baltimore is the 11th largest in the United States. At the same time, it is 1st in the United States in terms of “transshipment” of motor vehicles. In 2023, 750 thousand cars were loaded and unloaded there. Now the United States will have to completely change logistics in this direction, as well as adopt a plan to create a new bridge.

Trump is predicting at his rallies -- terrible terrorist attacks on the US -- that only he can protect us from.

I'm going to say it out loud now. I predict we'll see Trump's circle of propaganda call this a terrorist attack and blame Biden. I'm going out on a limb and predict that Trump will say it at a rally. Expect a troll to say it here within a few days.
Really,at this point what is not possible??? lower by the day w/more than 200 days to go,you have to be here to believe the shit that has/is/will happen,UNFKNPRECEDENTED. This MF is hinting at large scale violence through double speak and innuendo,if it's rigged dickhead why are you running??? Heads I win tales you lose,he should be charged w/threats of domestic terrorism, there is not an honorable bone in the creeps skeleton, minus the backbone that he lacks of course.

PLEASE,it's a FKN ACCIDENT,end of story, what kind of political exploitation is in store in our seemingly imploding country (the cons. crew on the bridge was 6 Hispanics is Trump gonna run w/the migrant thing)? For whomever, the bridge is 1.5 MI long not 10.5(Putin's pride and joy over the Kerch Strait may approach that length).

Yea it's one hell of a supply chain disaster, and leaves those people very cut off with only the long way out and around.
Yep, it's going to take a while just to open the harbor, much less replace that bridge. All the people whose livelihood depends on that harbor and the commerce coming from it are going to be affected. It's bigger than the state can handle. Let's see how well the federal government performs when it comes to reacting to this.

Oh believe me - if two politicians have something to fight for and both need somewhat monopoly on being the one who repairs it - the thing is gonna remain fucked up for years untill they find profits out of that

Been a lot of disasters lately to chase people away from prime real estate. Just saying...

To green not yellow, welcome new member. Pardon me for not replying directly because people who show up in politics after only a few posts are usually sock accounts that get deleted. Your post claimed some sort of government cluster fuck will happen though you have no evidence and then told me to believe you.

I don't believe you. Why should I? That kind of attitude is what happed after Katrina and Coronavirus but a different political philosophy is at work in this administration.

Or maybe not. Let's follow the events and find out rather than pre-judge.

Edit: My comment about this is "we'll see". But I must say that it's nice to hear Biden speak on this than anything Donald Trump would have said in a similar situation. Maybe he'd recommend bleach again, IDK.

THE PRESIDENT: Hello, folks. Sorry to keep you waiting. I was waiting to talk to the last member of the delegation in the region.

Good afternoon. Before I leave for North Carolina, which I’m going to do in a few minutes, I want to speak briefly about the terrible incident and accident that happened in Baltimore this morning.

At about 1:30, a container ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which I’ve been over many, many times commuting from the state of Delaware either on a train or by car. I’ve been to Baltimore Harbor many times. And the bridge collapsed, sending several people and vehicles into the water — into the river.

And multiple U.S. Coast Guard units, which are stationed very nearby, thank God, were immediately deployed, along with local emergency personnel. And the Coast Guard is leading the response at the port, where representatives from the Federal Highway Administration, the FBI, the Department of Transportation, the Army Corps of Engineers, as well as Maryland officials and Baltimore Police and Fire — they’re all working together to coordinate an emergency response.

Officials at the scene estimate eight people were unaccounted for still — not still, were unaccounted for. That number might change. Two have been rescued — one without injury, one in critical condition. And the search-and-rescue operation is continuing for all those remaining as we speak.

I spoke with Governor Moore this morning as well as the Mayor of Baltimore, the County Executive, United two — both United States senators and the congressman. And my Secretary of Transportation is on the scene.

I told them we’re going to send all the federal resources they need as we respond to this emergency, and I mean all the federal resources. And we’re going to rebuild that port together.

Everything so far indicates that this was a terrible accident. At this time, we have no other indication — no other reason to believe there was any intentional act here.

Personnel on board the ship were able to alert the Maryland Department of Transportation that they had lost control of their vessel, as you all know and have reported. As a result, local authorities were able to close the bridge to traffic before the bridge was struck, which undoubtedly saved lives.

And our prayers are with everyone involved in this terrible accident and all the families, especially those waiting for the news of their loved one right now. I know every minute in that circumstance feels like a lifetime. You just don’t know. It’s just terrible.

We’re incredibly grateful for the brave rescuers who immediately rushed to the scene.

And to the people of Baltimore, I want to say: We’re with you. We’re going to stay with you as long as takes. And like the governor said, you’re Maryland tough, you’re Baltimore strong, and we’re going to get through this together. And I promise: We’re not leaving.

Here’s what’s happening now. The search-and-rescue operation is our top priority. Ship traffic in the Port of Baltimore has been suspended until further notice. And we’ll need to clear that channel before the ship traffic can resume. The Army Corps of Engineers is on the spot and is going to help lead this effort to clear the channel.

The Port of Baltimore is one of the nation’s largest shipping hubs. And I’ve been there a number of times as a senator and as a vice president. It handled a record amount of cargo last year. It’s also the top port in America for both imports and exports of automobiles and light trucks. Around 850,000 vehicles go through that port every single year, and we’re going to get it up and running again as soon as possible.

Fifteen thousand jobs depend on that port. And we’re going to do everything we can to protect those jobs and help those workers.

The bridge is also critical to — for travel, not just for Baltimore but for the Northeast Corridor. Over 30,000 vehicles cross the Francis Scott Key Bridge on a daily basis. It’s virtually th- — well, it’s one of the most important elements for the economy in the Northeast and the quality of life.
My Transportation Secretary is there now. As I told Governor Moore, I’ve directed my team to move heaven and earth to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge as soon as hu- — humanly possible. And we’re going to work hand in hand with the support of Maryland — to support Maryland, whatever they ask for. And we’re going to work with our partners in Congress to make sure the state gets the support it needs.

It’s my intention that federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect to — the Congress to support my effort.
This is going to take some time. And the people of Baltimore can count on us, though, to stick with them at every step of the way until the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt.

You know, we’re not leaving until this job gets done — not leaving until then.

So, I just want to say God bless everybody who — everyone harmed this morning and their families. And may God bless the first responders, who — many of whom risking their lives.
And I’m going to — the reason I’m not going to take a lot of questions — there’s remaining issues that are open that we got to determine what’s going to happen in terms of — of the rescue mission and the like. But I’ll — I’m —
Q Do — do you plan to go to Baltimore, sir? And if so, how quickly?
THE PRESIDENT: I do and as quickly as I can. That’s what we’re working on
