Bare minimum 2 gallon pot, 3 gallon has a little growing room left with the root ball when I harvest mine (smart pots)

I've got an 18L drum to use. Might try a large indoor tent. Or cabinet. Was looking to try an auto at some stage.

Breathable fabric pots that are proven to grow bigger plants cost $5 each, why bother with used drum as a pot? And they can be re-used a dozen times

I'm a rookie, so I don't feel TOO bad, but I was unfamiliar with fabric pots until I looked them up just now. Aparently they are pretty cool and I'm going to give them a go on the next time out. One company called Genesis Fabric Pots says on their site "YOU CAN’T OVERWATER YOUR PLANTS IN A GENESIS FABRIC POT!".

I'm not sure how that works, exactly, but that would be nice to eliminate that variable. Do you still need to put it in a tray/pan, so the water doesn't run everywhere if it gets too saturated?

Sorry for waking up a dead thread, but this is useful info for some of us.

No worries man you didn't wake the thread some else did. also yes you still need to keep that fabric pot on a tray of some sort to catch run off from watering

Can't be bothered with something that looks like it's made of recyclable shopping bags. Besides. I picked the drum because it fits in both my current and new cabinets without being too much of a nuisance.

Also. I don't often pay attention to date stamps. I see things on here relating to things I'm looking at. Or may know about. Then I post my .02c worth.

Suit yourself, but here is what I learned today. Which root ball do you want?

-----

In case you were not familiar with the terms “root strangulation” or “girdling,” it is when the roots of a plant slowly strangle itself by circling around the base. In pots, this is caused by the growing roots hitting the edge of pot and continuing to grow around the inside.

Our Genesis Fabric Pots are made of 100% breathable fabric, facilitating air pruning, fibrous root growth, and preventing root strangulation. As you might know, when roots hit air, they stop growing. When the roots of your plant hit the side of the breathable fabric pot, they stop growing, causing the plant to grow new roots for a denser root system.

Its true the root balls that come out of fabric pots are very healthy , literally no root wrapping anywhere, just nice even root growth all over

How do fabric pots look like grovery bags?

I like the Hydrofarm brand, they are quite thick in comparisn to some .the Smart pot are a little thinner, but are thin enough that it makes transplanting very easy by simply folding the top of the bag and pull it down over itself flipping the bag inside out, cant really do that with hydrofarm brand, so I only repot from 1 gallon to 3-5 gallon and done

I got a 5 gal smart pot is that ok? I was thinking about sticking a straw in the dirt or a bottle to get the water to the roots without it over soaking the seedling....and it's also true you shouldn't transplant? Thank you!

I agree it drains so well!!! Especially if you set it on a strainer so it's about an inch or so off the ground
