Aurora Indica, Purple Urkel, and then some.

This is my second grow, my first one was a great teacher. I managed to bring 2 plants to harvest in a CFL/soil grow without fucking them up, so at least I know that much. I'm definitely the type to do my homework, so now that I've been studying, I want to try hydro. I know I can read all day, but nothing teaches like doing, so that's the point I'm at.

I have a feminized Aurora Indica (Nirvana) seedling that's a few days old, but seems to have suffered some nute burn on its first set of leaves (not the cotyledons), as I accidentally soaked the rock wool in a stronger nutrient solution than I had meant to, thought I rinsed it out well enough, but I guess not. At first I thought the plant was just growing more slowly than I'm used to, but upon better inspection, I noticed the tips were burnt and hindering growth, but now a second node is growing and looking good, so I'm not going to worry at this point. I also have a seed from a bag of what I was told was Purple Urkel, that is currently in rock wool, but not sprouted yet. As far as I know the PU is a clone only strain, but who knows, the grower may have just screwed his crop up and caused it to self seed, or it wasn't authentic PU. Either way it's going to be called PU for the purposes of this journal, and I know it is a tasty purple strain either way, since I've smoked the bud the seed came from. They were germinated with the paper towel method, and put into rock wool plugs with taproots about 1/2 inch long each. The PU was germinated 4 days after the AI as the first PU seed was a dud and showed signs of rot. I also have a seedling that is roughly 3 weeks old, but at this point I am going to use it to help me get some cloning practice. It is a mystery seed from a bag of some decent weed, that was definitely indica dominant. It was about a week old when the area I live in got hit by hurricane Irene. We didn't get much damage, but we were without power for almost 6 days. Those days were cool and wet outside, definitely not good conditions to put a tender seedling out, so with no power, my only option was to put it by a window in the house that gets the most sun, because I don't have anyone that could 'babysit' for me. The week it spent in that window didn't do it much good, the stem stretched like crazy, leaving about 1 1/2 inches between the cotyledons, the first node, and second node. The center growth shriveled and withered, essentially topping the plant above the second node at such an early age. There is some deformed growth there, but I don't think it will recover. Instead the plant has pushed its energy into growing 2 branches, 1 at each node. Since then, I've decided to use this plant essentially as an experimental mom. So, to promote clonable branches, and to counteract the stretch, I planted the rockwool plug that was just starting to peek through with roots into soil, and started doing LST. It's in a mixture of Miracle Grow Organic, MG moisture control, some extra pearlite, and some pulverized lime. I know this isn't the ideal soil, but in this case it doesn't matter to me much, and I was able to harvest off two plants grown in MG last grow, so it can't be all bad, haha.

Once the AI and PU seed(ling)s have grown a little bigger and are showing roots through their cubes, I have a small 2 site home made ebb and flow unit to put them in for the first few weeks of the veg stage, then I have DWC buckets waiting for them from that point on. In the mean time, while I finish work on my grow space, the plants are in an open Sterilite container under 2 x 26w 6500k CFL bulbs, with temps 75-85 F, 45-50% humidity, 24 hours of light, with a small fan blowing. When I'm done working on it, I will have room for flowering up to 4 plants, more if I go SOG eventually, space for veg, space for clones, and a completely seperate space for a mom.

Pics will come as soon as I can, I'm currently having some camera issues. Thanks for reading! :bigjoint:

Finally, some pictures. Taken this morning.

"Family Photo"
IMAG0030.jpg

My older plant that I will most likely end up using for experiment fodder.
30 days from seed.
IMAG0032.jpgIMAG0031.jpg

My poor little AI, she's disfigured and growing slowly, I'm not sure what's up with her.
15 days from seed.
IMAG0034.jpgIMAG0033.jpg

The PU seed still hasn't broken the surface, I'm guessing it's not going to by now, but I'm going to give it another week of being hopeful.

Okay, sorry, I've really been slacking on keeping this up to date. The PU isn't doing well, I have it in a 2 site ebb and flow with AI, and no matter what I do, it is showing signs of nute tox, while the AI thrives in the same conditions. I'm adjusting my game plan, some pics to come later, really, lol. The small plant, which I've affectionately named Bonzai, is growing steadily, but still very small, even the leaves have stayed extremely small, very much like a bonzai tree. It is showing fem preflowers, which is exciting. I'm going to repot and flower it in coming weeks, I want it to be at least 10 inches tall before flower. The PU will now be the tool I use to learn cloning, since its fan leaves are burning/dying off steadily, I want to take advantage of the few healthy branches it has now. AI will soon go into a mom-box that I'm currently working on. I expect to have AI learning to be a mom, and PU chopped into clones by this weekend. While everyone veg's in my mom box, I need to remodel my flower space, as it is currently the "raw" inside of a wardrobe with just a bit of mylar, and poor ventilation.

Now, for the current state of things before the pics, all ages approximate. Aurora - Aurora Indica (fem) from Nirvana, grown from seed, now roughly 4 weeks old. It had some difficulties early on but they seem to have all resolved and this plant is very vivacious. It has 3 main stems, long story, two are normal, they grow two fan leaves at each node, but one of the branches has steadily produced three leaves for the last 4 nodes. Minerva - Purple Urkel (or so I've been lead to believe) - Bag Seed, grown from seed, roughly 3 weeks old, has been showing strong signs of nute tox/lock out that I haven't been able to resolve, so I've just been cutting off the dead/dying leaves so the plant can direct energy and light to the places where it needs it the most. I've never cloned before, so to teach myself, I've done a bunch of research, and rounded up the materials including an old terrarium of my mom's from back in the day, we'll see how it works, lol. I took cuttings of the first four lowest branches tonight, dipped them in rooting powder, and put them into rock wool, inside the terrarium. Anyway, on with the pics, Aurora on the right, Minerva to the left, and Bonzai on the bottom, keep in mind, Bonzai is about 7 weeks old, and not rootbound. She seems to be a true dwarf.

The clones are looking good so far. They were tilted toward the side and a little droopy last night, but now they are standing tall and angled toward the light. A pic or two or three later.

PU looks like it's showing male preflowers, I'm going to keep an eye on it, but if it is, it and its "practice clones" are going in the trash ASAP, lol.

My Aurora is now ready to be a mom, she has her own private DWC delivery room. While she is making babies, I'll be renovating my grow space. I expect to take cuttings from her by next weekend, which should give me plenty of time to finish up all my projects. I have a 150 w HPS on the way, and will be painting the inside walls white, as I'm done and over with mylar. Throughout the weekend I finished ventilation and future odor control. Now I'm working on finishing a 4 site ebb and flow system for each side of my wardrobe. This way I will have a mom box, and 2 "chambers" at roughly 2'x2'x5', which can be used in any combination of veg/flower space. I'm pretty sure PU was male, so I made the sacrifice and just tore it out of my plans all together. I still have a couple clones from it growing, I just want to make sure they root before I toss them too. They are my first ever attempt at cloning, so I want to make sure I have it down before chopping up AI. I also have put Bonzai under 12/12, two 2700k 150 w CFL that I used for my last grow. She will grow under this light until harvest, as I'm saving the space with the HPS for the AI clones, only because I know the genetics, its feminized, etc, there should be no surprises, and I want the best quality set up going to the best plants.

I got seeds feminized from Nirvana, good price, discreet shipping, I highly recommend them, www.nirvanashop.com

I'm really loving this plant, short and bushy, strong and healthy. A great option for new growers, its so easy it practically grows itself as long as you give it the proper attention. She's going to be a great mom.

As of this morning, 3 of the 4 clones I took off exPU have rooted, roots shooting through the sides of the rock wool cubes. Now that I know it's easy, and I can do it, it's time to clone Aurora. I finished building and tested my new ebb and flow last night, and am getting my 150 w HPS tonight, and painting my walls tomorrow. Life is good.

This weekend I finished setting up one side of my cab, new 150 watt HPS from HTG Supply, fresh paint, etc. I moved Mama Aurora into that space to go into flower as she has outgrown my mom box. Made it through one cycle and the bulb blew already. Had to throw my homemade CFL fixture over her temporarily until I can replace the bulb. This is the second round of "light drama" she has gone through, i hope it doesn't have any negative effects on her. On the bright side, I took 12 clones on Friday, dipped in Clonex, just waiting for them to root now.

It is pretty sick, even with the bulb issue, thanks again buddy. I have a round of clones growing up for you (and myself, of course) now , keep your pants on. I think I may skip doing another AI mom right now and move to the blackberry for the next round.

Here's Mama Aurora, roughly 2 weeks into 12/12, showing beginning stages of flowering. I had to bend some of the branches down to keep them away from the light. She's eating up all the space and light that's available, I wish I had been able to start 12/12 a couple weeks earlier than I did, but at least I have some clones from her.

Some better pics of Aurora and clones unknown strain.

Edit: Also, only 5 out of 12 clones taken seem to be rooting, however slowly. I just took the rest of them out, I may take a couple more before mama starts flowering too heavily, maybe not. Right now I plan to keep one for the next mom, grow out 2 for myself, and give two to a friend.

I'm running into height issues with Aurora, she's getting too close to the light, due to vegging too long and a lot of extra stretch from previous lighting issues. I'm going to be doing some remodeling of my cabinet ASAP to give her at least another foot or so of space, when coupled with some creative tying down, should end any space issues.

Aurora - 1 week into flower

I renovated my flowering space last night, and Aurora already seems happier. I decided to throw caution to the wind, and put the 4 surviving AI clones into my 4 site ebb and flow set-up. They still aren't showing roots, but have been growing firmly in their rockwool cubes for a month now. I'll just wait and see, I guess. If there is no root growth, or worsening plant condition, over the next couple weeks I will abandon hope for these Aurora clones. That means I have to restart the whole process again from seed. I think I will stick with growing a soilborn mother with hydroponic offspring for the next round if the clones don't take. That is, if I can get future clones to take.
