Rick's "limp ass" routine is merely a ruse, lulling Negan into a comfort zone via false submission. This season will be an important one, featuring events that lead up to the (excellent) 'All Out War' storyline -- Michonne and Maggie eventually becoming queens of their respective kingdoms, Negan folding about as easily as a wet tissue (and having a tiny penis), Eugene - believe it or not - assuming the role of tech wizard and man-at-arms, Rick losing his hand, etc. Hopefully by season 9 the show will be getting around to the 'Whisper War', then things get really fucked up.....

Carl is right in the age range of the kids Negan coached pre SHTF.
There's a few panels of Negan busting a couple kids balls in the backstory short. Then his wife bitching him out for it.
This season is fanfare. They're doing an excellent job at keeping it pretty damn close to the comics.
They've also thrown some foreshadowing in for the next season in two scenes. One is not so obvious.
