Are cobs worth it?

I've read about growers using the best cobs available "cxb3590" and ending up with mediocre harvest. For example there is a professional grower on youtube that has a 1480 watt cob system in which he only achieved 850 grams of dried bud. I heard the claim of extra trichomes and etc outweigh the cons which is baloney especially when you fork over a few thousand and end up with less than a gram per watt. Ive seen $50 250 watt hid system achieve 1.4+ grams per watt. So why should I or anyone invest over $800 or more for a system that could take up to 3 years to break even if heat isn't a factor. Another factor to consider is the depreciating value of those cobs. By the time you break even those same cobs you bought are now worth less than half for what you paid for them. Where are the advantages? Where are these outstanding grow reports/journals using cobs?, Ive seen them with other types of leds 1,3,5 watts but not cobs.

Thc profile / terpene profile, then we can argue back and forth. Let see some subjective data, isn't that what you should be asking of the professional grower on Youtube. Vette the mutha...

So many variables to account for, that aren't, will literally make your head spin. :peace:

How did his side by side with HPS go under identical condition of water, nutes, temp, humidity, etc?

If someone can't pull at least 1.4 - 1.5 GPW using current cob technology they don't know what they are doing. I have a lamp using Vero 29 version 1 running at 40% efficiency, about 125 LPW. 3500K 80 CRI. The minimum I have pulled from it is 1.35 GPW and the best has been 1.68 GPW. That's 21 ounces from a 350w output lamp in 10 square feet, almost 60 g/ft. That doesn't include several Os of lower branch popcorn.

I have another lamp, my first one, using Vero v1 at nominal current. That's about 36% efficiency, 115 LPW in theory except for the fact that the Tj ran hot, about 65C, and it consistently achieved 1.25 GPW. 80 CRI, Kelvin averaging out to 3350.

Heres some results using COBS- cxb 3590

Sounds like a lot of wattage and inefficient lights...

I was running the numbers for some friends, for $2/w @ 56% efficiency(kit DIY), ROI is 11,538Hours over se hps. (At 2,000 hour bulb replacements) that's at $.12/kWh and $60 1000w bulbs.

$1/w full DIY @ 50% efficiency is under 5,000 hours ROI.

It's an investment sure, but what isn't? And if you're DIY, when it comes time to replace those leds(long ass time from now), I'm sure something more efficient will be available for a cheap upgrade.

the drivers and heatsinks will last forever and you'll be slapping the latest 0.10/watt 70% efficient cobs on there....will be cheaper than bulb replacements

Pretty amazing feat to find a "professional grower" on youtube who can't grow for shit and at the same time able to find "outstanding grows with other led grow lights but not cobs."

Them some skillz!
They do not compare at all youtube, they do not list grams per watts. Just basic vids without hardly any info. The best one i have found is from a guy who goes by the name sherbert

Ive read about many other growers complain about the yields from these new cobs but i have also heard otherwise. It seems there is no middle ground. Either its the best system on earth or the worst.

The video I posted has some detailed results if you watch the video right till the end.

There are lots of growers here that share their results with COB's and if they know what their doing with a good yielding strain they can hit 2 GPW or more, 1.3 to 1.5 is common.
That sounds fantastic and hope it is true. It just scares the hell out of me when im about to drop a precious hard working grand and a few growers complain about yields.
