Anyone grow poppies? (Papaver Somniferum)

Just wondering if anyone grows poppies (Papaver Somniferum). I'm kinda interested in doing this. Is it possible to grow indoors?
Whats the average time it takes to harvest from seed? Is it relatively easy?

A number of us have. I believe 2cimdma is the one who creates heroin from sunlight, sandy soil, seed and perserverence. Rory? is that the guy? Anyway, to the op. Yes, it is frighteningly easy to do. If you are unwilling to seach for the high yielding strains, go down and get some poppy seeds from your local grocery store. The plant was bred for seed production for your bagels but they will produce ample quantities of morphine and codeine for your enjoyment. Or you could purchase seeds online about anywhere that have afghani potency.

The only thing you need to concern yourself with is that:
1. seedlings are tough to transplant
2. seedlings are highly susceptable to stem rot at an early age
3. The plant itself is in a convenient legal limbo, if you are an old lady and you have the occasional bright red or white flowers growing in your back yard, you won't have much of a problem. If you have a beard and a glazed look you might. You might have a problem with explaining a field of them, or even a single pod that has been scored you can run afoul with feds right quick. I recently read a story of some guy who was arrested for having grown and harvested a couple of dozen poppy plants. The typical local constable claimed that just one plant could produce a kilo of high grade heroin. That we should all be so lucky as point - four
4. You are going to have to grow quite a few in order to get any satisfactory yield.

I don't recall ever managing to get more than a scant few grams of low grade opium for my effort, and I planted dozens of giganthemums.

Good luck to you - they are strange and beautiful plants and flowers in their own right.

Appreciate the feedback fellas. After this grow I might plant some for the hell of it, to see what I can get.

I never plan to make heroin or smoke it. Id rather just ingest it, if that's possible. Bth, I don't really know to much about it. That's why im doing as much research as I can now lol

Thanks again,

I didn't want to either, yeah, there was the fent guy but there was another guy who harvested a whole lot of o and claimed he could get a better price and could transport it easier if he went through the process. It was cool and all but in reality, just about anyone can get H, the exotic is and probably always will be cooked o. I thought about growing this year, but the tomatoes took top priority. I kept seeds from the years I bought pods from e-bay (thetransplants - assholes) but that gig is over and probably for the better. Point is tho, it isn't that hard at all, once you get to the "cabbage" stage.

If you do it direct sow to where you're growing them. Try to get a high morphine content strain. I'm partial to hens and chicks personally because they have good potency and are quite nice looking. I would chop and dry the pods for tea rather than going through the process of trying to make opium. Its a lot of work for little reward and scores on your pods are very hard to explain away if someone gets curious...

Is there really not a more efficient way of extracting opium? Like maybe how they extract the san padro cactus. Their is just no matter way the Afghans perfected the art of harvesting opium you know their is a lot more sap then you can milk out.

and more likely frowned upon by the man...
Can't be too much worse they can charge you with conspiracy to manufacture heroin just from cutting the pods I would never make too much either way. would be nice to extract the morphine after you milk it just treat it like really strong heroin and you won't die.

one would think that any crude extraction process would yield opium, after all, it is just the "sap" of the plant. Any solvent, maybe even water should work. But no. Sure, I've made the obligatory"poppy putty" and acidulated water will get you some active chemicals in a solution but it isn't O.

someone mentioned ion exchange resins and I have heard some success with poppy straw. If I had poppy straw I would like to try it.

but I think those days are over.

sad really, the first time I got poppies they were nearly covered with black tears. A tea made with four capsules put my wife and Iface into the toilet and afterward a deep dreamy nod.

after those were gone we never were able to find any of that quality

I'm researching this as we speak. Didn't fdd2blk (he still around?) have a grow guide around here somewhere?

But, I got nothing important to contribute as far as growing these goes... yet.

How long do they take to sprout, veg... etc? tips n tricks would be nice! :)

(side note: this site changed so much... :( )

plant in sandy, well drained soil, some loan in there. Seed should be ever so slightly covered. I misted them lightly couple times a day but I'm nuts. You just don't want to wash the seeds away. Expect germination in warm climate in a week.

if I am in containers I water from the bottom, if in the ground, not too much and early in the day. Most people fail in the first two weeks cause of stem rot.

after that give them a little balanced food and keep their feet dry.

I hit them once more with a bloom formula when the pod appears. You will see the biuds at the end of a bent over stalk. Soon enough it will become erect and you will see huge red or white flowers. A week or two after the petals fall you will see the crown flatten. Time to milk or harvest.you can milk it several times and you can also milk the stalks though it isn't near as potent.

Nice. Thanks Canndo! I remember the sandy soil part lol. FF Ocean Forest ok you think? I just had some laying around from my herb/veggie garden. IME that soil drains pretty well. Although, my experience is only with Scotts, FF OF/Happy Frog, and generic and homemade soil mixtures (last non-Fox Farm soil i used had rubber in it! and got rock hard after a few waters).

But, I think today is about a week since sowing them right into the soil. Covered very lightly and tried not to let dry out. And the first few very tiny green specks are starting to appear. I think the majority of them will take longer though because its a little cooler here.

But if i remember ffd2blk's tutorial, plant them in shallow containers correct?

Thanks again man.
