Anyone ever used a UV filter to prevent slime build up in a nutrient reservoir?

Aquariums, ponds, nutrient reservoirs? Would a UV filter keep reservoirs from getting slimy? I alread bought one and hooked it up so we shall see it cycles on for 15 minutes every 3 hours, reservoir temps are 62-68F. I am using House and garden vann de zwaan nutrients. I bought 4 like this one, hoping that it will keep virus's, harmul bacteria from my recirculating system.

I use an 18watt bulb with a 320 gph pump for a 22 gallon reservoir. I cycle 30 min on and 8 hours off. It might be more effective longer. No bulb is pure UVC light and there is some UVB light. UVB light will unchealate nutrients. So I err on the side of less and just enough to keep fungus and fungus gnats in check. It also kills fungus gnats, algae, and other living organisms. So beneficial mycorhizzae will also be killed. I found it much more convenient than adding h2o2 everyday.

I use aeroponics and chem nutes, so I dont think theres any beneficial bacteria in my rootzone, its very clean and very cold inside. Thanks for the response, I think I will run a longer cycle maybe twice/day. I have 40 plants on a 10 gallon reservoir and 3/4hp sump pump

I found some more info on the UV light filters, they are becoming popular in the UK for preventing disease, algae, pythium(root rot). ONly problem is the UV light will drop certain minerals so I found this product only available in the UK that resupplies the lost minerals from your nutrient solution. I am going to switch all my nutrients to Ionic because its simple 1 part nutrient and Ive seen Heath get some pretty good results from it. Funny how my local hydroshop wont carry this stuff, guess that would make it too easy to grow, cheap and customers wouldnt come back with problems looking to buy solutions. http://www.emeraldcitysupply.com/product.asp?CatalogCode=IONICUV

What are you using for PH down?

Many PH down products are made with phosphoric acid. The problem with phosphoric acid based PH down is that during flowering the reservoir solution is already saturated with phosphorus. Where the phosphoric acid hits the solution it forms a plume of phosphorus. The solution cant hold it all because it is already saturated with P, so the excess falls out as a solid, which sticks to everything it touches and makes everything slimy.

I was spending 45 minutes every week cleaning up and desliming my system. I switched to sulphuric acid based PH down and the slime disappeared. Now all I have to do is rinse out my system once a week. Slime no more.

You can easily make your own sulphuric acid based PH down. Battery acid is pure sulphuric acid with a little pure water. You can get battery acid from any auto parts store. A liter costs between $3.99 and $5.99, depending where you get it.
1/3 cup per gallon of water for weaker PH down. 1/2 cup per gallon for normal strength PH down. Use rubber gloves and goggles while making it. One liter will make 6-8 gallons CHEAP!! *on edit USE ONLY RO water or DISTILLED water!

Use the whole container of battery acid - make 6-8 gallons in one shot. You can neutralize whatever residual acid is left in the container with baking soda, then toss it. You now have a 5 year supply of PH down for $3.99 and NO MORE SLIME!!

Hope this helps!

Good info there, I use Mad farmers which is phosphoric acid based. I change the water every 3 days, clean and flush with tap water every other change. I don't usually add any PH, I change it when its above 6.2, for PH up I just use some more silica. I was thinking just adding another 5 gallons of nutes(4.6-5.0) without adjusting PH. I dont really have time to mess with battery acid, which products at the hydro store are sulphuric acid based? Im thinking of switching to a simple 1 part nutrient IONIC grow/bloom/boost, Heath seems to have great results with the Ionic line and Im tired of mixing so many nutrients.
