I have a pretty good collection of 5.1 surround CDs. Some of the older classics are derived from ancient quadrophonic 8-tracks. Some others (e.g. Beatles) are fan-created and are quite astounding. Then there are the commercial DTS and SACD discs that are also amazing.
When each speaker is responsible for less of the instruments and voices than usual, the clarity of what they put out is better and you hear things that were previously masked. Plus some of the commercially engineered discs also have remixes (e.g. Fleetwood Mac's Rumours) that are very cool to hear. Add in the aural sensation of being literally surrounded by the music and some good herb, and it's a pretty great time.
