Perlite with Rockwool starters here, decided to stay closer to Hempy's original recipe. Several people are successful with coco, so Im sure you can make it work & find help if needed.

PH & PPM, some say they don't, but why leave it to chance.. You can find fairly cheap testers on amazon

Only a bit ahead of you on hempy, so hopefully others will chime in if Im off-base on anything.

Do u check ur stuff before u put it on the plant or do u test the runoff: Both, before is most important to make sure your 'dialing-in' your environment properly. The runoff you want to test after the plant gets some size to make sure there's not too much salts/TDS building up in your res.

And then if u do catch it off the runoff how do u add nuts or PH up or down then: PH and add the nutes to the water before giving them to plants.

So first u PH the water ur about to add..Then u test the runoff to make sure its between 6.0-6.2 or wherever its supposed to be..Then u add nutes and it it needs adjusting do the adjusting with the nutes??? Is this right

PH water & add nutes before pouring it in.. You'll get a feel for how much your nutes affect PH with a little practice. Also, dont use Any nutes at all until the plant is 2 weeks old, then start at about 25% of what is directed on the label. So at the very beginning, your only testing/balancing the PH, and making sure your water is clean (low PPM). Usually Well water, or city water with additives, will already have crap in it you dont want. This is why you see people using r/o (reverse osmosis), rain, or purified water.. Don't worry about testing the runoff until the plants are bigger.

But if i wanna go organic in the hempys people say RO water and distilled are no good becuase its dead water...So i need a ppm tester too along with the PH???Yeah i know no nutes right away...I think im gonna get those filters to put on my fuacet for city water and let it sit out for a bit...

PPM; I got mine before the r/o filter, because water quality is poor here. My seedlings are drooping, now you have me wondering if the R/O could be a factor.

Some people seem to have luck with just plain old tap water, and not testing. Id rather have the tools to understand the environment as much as possible. Id think not testing is a gamble.

EDIT: My 1st grows were dirt, and I didnt test (or research) anything. I was able to get yeilds, but they were small. For the time it takes from start to finish, i think its worth putting in the extra time & gear to finish with better results..

Cal-Mag Plus

Cal-Mag Plus is a custom plant supplement designed to help with calcium, magnesium, and iron deficiencies in nutrient fertilizer programs. Cal-Mag Plus serves as a catalyst for the major elements to work in symbiosis with one another to prevent blossom end rot in tomatoes and peppers and tip burn in lettuce. If you’re using Reverse Osmosis H2O, this product is a must have. A good RO/DO system will strip out any and all the salts and minerals from your tap water and you'll begin with zero ppm. Unfortunately fertilizers will not replace these elements in the amounts needed for proper growth. The lack of the elements in sufficient quantities will cause inter-veinal burning, especially during the later phases of a plant’s life cycle.

Soil Container Gardens: 1 tsp per gallon of water every watering with standard fertilizer.
Accelerated Formula: 2 tsp per gallon of water every watering with standard fertilizer.
Hydrogardens: 1-2 tsp per gallon of nutrient solution. Use with preferred hydroponic formula.
