Any drawbacks to having an oversized fan?

Hey guys.

I've come across what could potentially be a huge bargain. I wanted some advice from some more seasoned growers.

The bargain is a fan and filter combination. Its an 8" carbon filter and the fan is a Torin Sifan DDC241-241 mounted in an acoustic box. I reckon I'll be able to get it for about £35, which is crazy cheap.

Things I wanted to know:
1) Would this be too much for my space, even with an SMSCom Smart Fan Controller? 240x120x220cm tent
2) Is this going to be prohibitively expensive to run 24/7? The website lists it as using max 510w - fucking light is only 400w
3) If this were you, would you drop the £35 on this combo, or would you get a new 6" combo for twice the money.

If you get a controller, then you could dial it back as needed.

These products can be individually programmed for constant volume, constant speed or constant pressure to meet very specifically your individual requirements. Up-to 31 different airflows are possible with a given programme with 16 operating points evenly spread on each of the 31 curves.

Maybe give them a call and let them know their program selection page is not working.

Even with the controller, do you think it would be drawing a lot of power during use? I want to try and keep costs down if possible, keep the lady happy

Any thoughts on the third question? What would you sink money into?

If noise is not an issue, I would go with the oversized fan and a controller. But thats just me, I cant comment on power consumption, but I would assume running it at lower speed would be less energy. I would verify power usage with a kill-a-watt

If its a good fan and it doesn't work out just sell it. I personally like having more ventilation as needed.

Get a variac instead of a controller. The cheap controller starts and stops the motor to control speed. The variac controls voltage. With a variac the fan will last longer and run quieter. The only down side to to big a fan is moving air too fast over the filter and it not control the smell.

I would get a filter that is bigger than the fan to. Lime a size or two up.

I would get a filter that is bigger than the fan to. Lime a size or two up.

The filter that comes with is Rhino Pro 200x600 (8"x24"), rated at 1125m3/hr. The max rating for the fan is double that, so would be running at hopefully 20-30%.

I'm gonna look into the variac now, as the smscom will just slam it on to full power once it hits a max temperature. I can see it sucking my house in on itself like the scene in Poltergeist!

For me the only drawback of a huge CFM pull is decreased humidity... my room is sitting at 15%.

It will work. Jus remember once you exceed the filter rating it won't filter smell.

Use the filter for one grow and then buy an oversized filter. You van hook a cheap 4 inch bathroom fan to the old one and make a scrubber. Scrub air outside the grow area to really kill smell.

I ordered refill carbon to refill some old filters just for that purpose.

Try working in a clean room like the ones they use for semiconductor manufacturing. If it is really dry I found that having a thick cotton towel dipped in a container of water helps a lot. Your really heavy Egyptian cotton wicks up water the best...just stick it in front of a fan and its good to go.

I haven't used those products. They look fine though. As long as it controls voltage. The sc3 would be the same size as I run. I run this one.

The bigger the power of the fan the bigger (and more expensive) carbon filter you have to buy if odour control is needed.

Any drawbacks to having an oversized fan?
