Bottom line is, yes HID is better, but if you can't do HID (money, space, stealth) cfls are good.... a lot better then 0... I tried vegging with them this year for the 1st time and I was impressed...

I take a lampbase and attach to a 4X4 steel electrict box. I add a lamp cord. I attach to a small board. Then scew in a large CFL and you have a small lamp stand. Next I put four pots side by side, two by two. I lay the lamp stand on top of my pots. Now the light is surronded by plants. No lumens are wasted. The plants will snuggle the light, staying an inch or two back from the heat.

Becuse I use lamp stands I have designed everything in fours. This keeps my watts a little lower.
