Hey,
Well you want to measure your feed solution by your part's per million (PPM) and you do this by your TDS-total dissolved salts. After all your nuts are salts.
Well epsom salts are good at add two table spoons to every 5 gallons. You can do this as a preventative in hydroponics.
A RO/DI system is a reverse osmosis/ de-ionizer. This is a water purifier system. You do this to eliminate harmful substance and compounds from your water. Than once eliminated you put all the nuts into the water that your plants need. You can get away with an RO system.
In hydro you should notice your plants growing- but it also relays on your light intensity as well.. What light u running again?
Oh. Make sure your pH is corrected as well since TDS and pH go hand in hand.

Yes they look great.. Keep up the cleanliness :)
The RO system are used for everything. For example, anyone who keeps saltwater, especially reef aquia should run an RO/DI unit.. Now, in new homes RO system are built in or for those who do not have the RO system built in, you can instal one on your sink. Now their are several models to buy to that will accomidate any person from apprtment grower to someone who grow's with a shop :) For you, your price will most licky be around 100.
Dont get me wrong- most homes actually do not have an RO built in- its usually homes that have a home builder's diagram and request to have one put in place.
RO systems are nothing new and are used by busnesses and all pet stores. They have hit the house market hard and can now be place on your tap nossel :) look into it..
The Ro/DI is a Di-ionizer-best for reefs..

On a scale of 1-10 how bad do I need a RO system?

Tought, I guess a 5 is the best answer.. their are several good things about an RO system. I would not worries to much about it since you are not running much lights;therefor, dont need to get technical.. An RO is a very easy thing to instal for around 100. I see a huge benifit in buying for several good reasons-but we are on a differnt scale of growing. An RO system is a good insurance policy when groing for money :)
