Depends on your reason for taking it. If you are taking it for medical reasons and have anxiety that comes on quick and is not a chronic condition for you just occasional anxiety I would take Xanax. If you have fairly constant anxiety that is an everyday occurrence and you would be taking this everyday I would go Lorazepam, In my experience Valium is better than Ativan and still has the lasting effect that Ativan has over Xanax IMO. If you are taking this specifically for recreation I would get the Alprazolam. Like Duck said the strong onset and short duration of Xanax makes it more addictive, its like the Cocaine of benzos.

I would also like to add that in my situation where I have extreme anxiety I have never felt any stronger addicted to benzos then say grabbing a soda every now and again. I take 3-4 mg of Xanax per day and can stop cold turkey and endure the Anxiety with very little physical withdrawl but this is not the case at all for friends I know using recreationally.

i'm prescribed to one 2mg xanax twice a day (bars), sometimes I like to take them as prescribed, and sometimes I get wild with them and eat 4 or 5 and then I wake up three days later with none and I wonder what happened and I have to retrace my steps through cell phone pictures, talks with friends, and the good ol internet..

Almost forgot I posted this. I found benzos to be extremely beneficial drugs when taken properly. The problem is like any other drug they too often fall into the hands of the wrong people that make it look bad. It's mainly common sense. Don't drink alcohol or mix other drugs with them unless you know what you're doing. Take it as prescribed. Sometimes people get a dependency but that does not make them an 'addict'. When you're dependent you can slowly ween yourself off to minimize withdrawal. If you're gonna abuse it have the common decency to stay out of public and out of trouble.

personally i find klonopin to be the most effective for me.
its not as euphoric imo and the long half life is nice.
there was a point i could take 20mg of xanax just for a therapeutic dose.
and it killed my memory for a long time afterwards ...and still recovering

i wouldnt recommend taking long term. there are other methods tuat should also be used to reduce anxiety
