Hi everyone switching over to my first diy cob grow long time grower using other technologies, and from these forums I have so much great information I just have one quick question on my driver's to make sure I understand.
My flowering area is 4'x4' so I'm setting up 1 cob per sq ft I have 16 Vero18s, 8 of the 4000k and 8 of the 3000k, I've got 16 cooliance pin fin heatsinks good for up to 60w (thinking future upgrading) I am unsure if i want to run my Vero 18s at 1400ma for a beautiful 42W per sq ft, or 1050ma for still a strong 31W per sq ft of COB. I have everything but my driver's on hand.
Meanwell hlg-240h-c1400 or the c1050 max Volts out is 179V on the c1400 driver and Vero18 @1400ma is 30.2 volts equaling 5.9 COBs per driver, which means only 5 in series per driver leaving me with 3 hlg-240h-c1400 and having to buy a cheap eBay 40w driver for the single left over COB.
Or the hlg-240h-c1050 is 238 volts output and Vero18s @1050ma is 29.5V meaning I can run 8 in series per driver. Running 2 drivers with no goofy leftovers.
I'm not extra concerned with light loss or penetration (that's not what she said!!!!) As I am running 4x4 tent and I always run a full 4x4 canopy via heavy low stress training and using NL influenced genetics keeping very short filling the entire 4x4 area with a bushy thick budded canopy.
Which route would you old COB pros go if you were building my setup the 1050ma the 1400ma? Thanks for any tips and advice in advance guys and gals!!!!!

Hi .. I would like to contribute little things, which can save some time in decision making and planning structures grossed DIY LED panel .. unfortunately I did not include CreeCXB2530.. Althought now Cutter. com.au is fantastic the money mostly in high 3000K version 90CRI .. I think that the excellent choice ..s even better range and a heavy competitor for 18 vero .. Now a very interesting choice of chips from Citizen ver.5
Here is the calculation of the required amount COB VERO18, CXB3070, CXB3590 PPFD space for 3x3 ft2
.. For the size of your space needs'll be easy to convert ..

Running 6 Vero 18's @ 1.05a 4000k (4 80 cri and 2 90 cri) in a 35"x21" as my first diy cob setup. Flipped to 12/12 on the first of the month. I must say that the g13 labs WW and White lavender have some really nice development already. Much larger than I was getting at this point with the 7 band led I was using previously :weed:

using cobs? That single plant is gonna be over 8zs
Don't let the haters deter you man. Those buds look top notch man. And a half p from a plant is great. Big colas are totally strain dependant. My alien blues has big long colas, where my cookies and cream crosses has more golf ball sized bugs. Your finished buds look way nicer than anything I have seen the hater grow. Keep doing what you're doing bro looks great.

Thank you for adding this I was getting little worried that I had spent $750 building a light that wasn't going to be a good flowering light.
I use heavy low stress training and various NL#5 influenced genetics so I keep very short but round trees :) I've got years of experience but had always used HID and large CFL's until I picked up a couple platinum LED lights a couple years ago and those have actually been really good to me.
I knew with the light I built all the specs and numbers say I should have a killer light for flowering but I was getting some very negative feedback the couple times I have asked about it here on RIU. I'm running similar to what you are.
Full 4'x4' canopy so I'm running 16 of the Vero 18s @1050mA via 2 meanwell HLG-240h-c1050a's. I bought cooliance pin fin heatsinks that are capable of cooling 60 watts thinking possible future upgrading, I used L-channel to make my frames and I laid out a 4'x4' grid when I build my frame marking off each 1'x1' area in it and mounted each heatsink dead center of the 1'x1' square.
Recently just moved into a new place so I'm starting from scratch with a couple of my trusty mothers that I took clones from and planted some new beans so it will be 1 1/2 - 2 months before my first clones are ready for my new flowering light. I'll keep the results posted for the people hating on the Vero 18s lol

It's good to see so many happy growers growing with cobs in this thread. It's even better seeing that the DIY spirit is alive as ever.

I wanted to stop by and share some news on Heaven Bright. A new product was launched recently called the "Skinny Mo'". You can find a photo of it in my avatar. Also, this month marks the one year mark for Heaven Bright and so there will be a month-long promotional code for anyone, which cuts 100$ of any order: 1YEAR+

I also wanted to address a few things.

@hyroot

Not many people always know the full story yet attempt to paint it like they do. Back in the Summer of 2015, the 7th party cup competition went into action and Heaven Bright was listed as a sponsor for the competition. HB put up a first-generation 200W lighting fixture for a prize. As the months went by, I strayed away from RIU and focused on bettering what fixtures Heaven Bright had at the time. I returned sometime around January to be informed by the party cup host that the admins more or less took away the incentives for companies to sponsor the cup comp by muting his abilities early on to promote companies like Heaven Bright. I didn't have time to follow the lengthy cup comp process and from the host's words, took it that Heaven Bright was hardly, if at all, mentioned throughout the competition. Shortly after the host and I spoke over the cup comp details, the cup winner messaged me asking about the Mothership and if that was what he won. I attempted to enlighten him on what information the cup comp host and I had shared, including the transformation of products throughout the time the cup comp started and when it finished but couldn't get through to him, as he was just happy to have won the cup comp. At the time, I felt like Heaven Bright was being cheated because of the how the admins regulated the cup comp and reduced the company exposure that would have otherwise transpired in a previous cup comp, which undermined Heaven Bright's involvement and it's original gift offer. The cup winner and I briefly discussed an alternative gift reward, as the first-generation lighting fixture that had originally been offered back in the Summer of 2015 was not only discontinued and sold out but also obsolete. We settled on a discount being an appropriate gift reward but I never finalized on how much it would be and thus left the cup winner hanging. Looking back, I was likely overwhelmed with business and life but I left him hanging and that's on me.

Some of you know I haven't been on here in a long time and that's just because I've chosen not to be. The time off definitely allows me to reflect on past decisions that I've made and allows me to contemplate whether or not I did the right thing. The cool thing about life is that you sometimes have the opportunity to do the right thing, even after you've done the wrong thing. During my time off of RIU, I decided that I'd do what I thought was the right thing, which was to fulfill what I had offered the cup winner and so I have done so by messaging him a discount code.

@Scotch089

I never fell off, I just fell in. Last year, there was a bunch of commotion over the design of the first-generation fixtures that Heaven Bright was offering and rightfully so, as it was not a safe design by any means. Details or no details, you upheld an honorable stance over the matter, one that I failed to comprehend at the time. It's sometimes difficult to admit defeat or that you're wrong, especially when it's something that matters to you so much. I'm just contempt that I can identify what I did wrong and change my course and am thankful that you stood up and objected that design, as individuals like you have subsequently shaped me to be who am I today and I'd like to think that is someone who is more well-rounded and knowledgeable. Thanks, dude, for being real.

@OneHitDone

I'm back ;)

Hey kalonji. Interested in vero29 2,1amp footprint. Whats ur setup, 1 per square foot? Have u tried with other optics? Reflector, bare?
Yo Bro,

My v29's are in the first version optic lamp. It's 4 x v29s in a box that is 18x12". I play around with the optics that came with the lamp. Optic included magnetic glass lenses that are effective in focusing the beam a lil bit. depending on the height of the plant and other conditions i remove or attach the lenses or sometimes a combo of on n off.

My space is is about 50 x 26" Those four cobs lights work well except for at the ends of the garden. I added 2 cxb 3590cd 3500k to each end. The v29's are 4k. Ive got a t5 agromax uvb in there as well as 730nm lights-off pontoon.

Have you considered throwing a decent Burple in the middle?
@AquariusPanta hows everything going w/ your lights & the mkt.?
I really liked the V-series you first came out w/. Are you coming out w/ more lights soon?
I totally disagreed w/ how some were treating you around the forum & expressed that. I give you props!
Something is moving in Bridgelux,today,finally, the first page of VERO features updated with new data:
- Market-leading efficacy, 155 to 177 lm/W typical
- Lumen output: From 520 to 37,260 lumens
I liked your lights allot too! I recommended you to someone who was trying to get a light in Portugal but am not sure where you distribute? Anything new?

This is My retrofit mars700W 16 Vero 18's. It used all existing parts. I only bought the cobs and lenses. sorry about the pic I had just hung the light and wasn't very tidy.

Wicked cool! Never seen a rebuild quite like that.
I own an $800 Hydropinics Hut X-5 500 that sux terribly for flowering. Only flowered once w/ it & it barely gave me 1/3 of my enhanced white light. It has 30watt COBs on a star shaped chip surrounded by all in one Burple/bluish pink 5 watters. So, I really wanna remove the COBs & replace them w/ good white ones.
It is a brand new, expensive light that is still under warranty but I doubt they will honor it if anything shits the bed anyways (terrible company) & I now have no use for it besides veg. But on full illumination it has to much red to veg, w/ 660nm diodes in flower mode. I thought it would work good seeing how their entire spectrum is in one diode & COB, aside from the 660's. They are The only company I could find that mixed their whole spectrum in one diode instrad of RGB type panels.
Thinking it will be a great enhanced white light of i remove the Pink COBs & replace them w/ Veros or Crees.
Have you ever heard of anyone doing this w/ lights other then MARS?
Do you think I should try w/ inexpensive cobs to see if it's possible or just get what i want to begin with?
I was thinking Veros. Seems they are the best deal. Here's a pic of the array w/ the lens on. I took it apart but the whole thing is just sitting on the lens making it really hard to remove it & put it back together. image.jpgSee the 660's in the corners. The rest are high R+B w/ like 17% green in there too.
Was so disappointed w/ the results. HH told me to sell it on E-Bay. The lenses trap airborne dirt too. They told me to tidy up my grow room. Idiots. I keep my room pretty clean compared to many of my friends.
Ok, rambling over. Heavily medicated from my surgery so excuse my being out of context. Thanks!
I am now going to read this thread to learn more about Veros.
