Air Stone in Flood and Drain Res?

Hello,
I am new to hydro, Im currently running a 3x6' table 1000w light on 4' track with 12 plants and a 25gal res. with Gen. Hydro a+b...

My questions is, should I add an air stone to my res?
I was going to pick one up but I hear conflicting information from friends, some say it isn't necessary with liquid nutrients...

Also, I hear a lot of conflicting information as to how often I should flood my table... Im growing in 6x6" rockwool in pots with a layer of clay pellets on the bottom. Im using analog timers with 15min intervals for pumps. What is your suggestion?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Aeration of the res is always good for the simple fact it keeps dissolved oxygen high. The thing I learned is air stones eventually plug up.
I put in a fish tank power head in my res. It circulates the water and using the air tube that should come with it, it will allow it to suck room air and inject it into the water stream.
Just make sure you put it in low enough so when you flood, it doesn't come above the water level. I glued the suction cup onto the lower inside of my res to hold it in place.

Yes you should add several, keeps the bad bacteria, molds and fungus from growing inside your res also. You can unclog airstones by soaking them in a solution of 5% bleach and water for several hours and then a 10% vinegar bath followed by a hot soak.

Flood and Drain system when using Rockwool it does hold alot of water.
You should only need to flood once a day for 5 minutes. Small plants (under 2 weeks in the flowering area) need less water.
Depending on the conditions, You may flood them once daily for 1 min or once every 2 days for 2 mins.

Different shapes and types of rockwool will require different watering. The trick is to keep the medium damp, never saturated or wet. Flooding rockwool several times a day sounds unneccessary to me for any shape other than very small cubes (4") used in NFT or aeroponic systems, which might be expected to support a full sized plant. Something like that would require frequent watering, but not flooding.

Slabs are usually smaller in volume of rockwool per plant than an 8" pot full of loose rockwool (floc), so my figures from here may not work for you.

An 8" x 8" pot of floc will soak up about 2 litres of water. That's plenty for a roughly 30" tall plant in mid flower or active veg (ie mothers) for 24 hours, plus about 12-24 hours in reserve. Nice if a pump fails and you don't check daily.

The trick is to match how much water you give to how much the plant uses. It's a bell curve. There's too little, just right and too friggen much. Most newbs overwater plants to death. Yellow leaves? Slow growth? Back off the watering.

Watering once a day is fine if your medium will store enough water for the plant for that time period. Take a block of rockwool or a pot of floc, weigh it, note the dry weight (in grams). Add water until it drains freely and allow exces to drip away for about 10 mins. Weigh again. Subtract the dry weight and you know how the weight of the water. Since 1g of water = 1ml = 1cc, you know how many ml/cc of water is in your medium.

Put the wet medium under your lights. Check the weight a day later.
If the water weight has reduced by 50-66% in 24 hours, it would be OK to water again.

If the weight remains above ~50-60% of the original wet weight, roots may drown, develop fungus probs, etc. Either give less volume if handwatering or flood for a shorter period with your timer. Dial it down until your pots are fairly light by the end of 24 hours (25% of saturated wet weight).

Ideally, the plant will suck up 50% of the total water in the medium in 24 hours. This should keep root probs at a minimum and give max growth.

Contrary to newb belief, watering more than a plant needs doesn't force a plant to grow any faster or better. Usually kills 'em. We're not talking turbochargers and fuel injection here. With plants, there's right and there's dead.

Great! thanks for the info! I was wondering if they would get plugged up, but I guess its worth it if it adds oxygen to the water, im totally going to go pick one up today. Im guessing they are cheaper at a pet store vs. the hydro shop..?

Wow, this information is golden, I think Im definitely overwatering my rockwool, which would explain the drooping leaves. Just like you said, I made the newb mistake of overwatering in fear of killing my plants from underwatering lol. It is hard to determine if the rockwool is damp or not, especially since I have a layer of clay pellets on the top, I will look into a large scale to weigh the plants dry and watered. I use to use that technique when growing soil back in the day. Excellent advice! Thanks marijuananation!
After overwatering my plants for several days my plants all look fairly yellow and the rockwool is soaked even after not watering for over 24hours... is there anything else I should do besides wait until the rockwool isnt soaked? should I set the blocks on a towel to soak up more water?

Thanks, you guys are awesome!!!https://www.rollitup.org/members/marijuananation-190287.html

i dont see the harm in putting a airstone or multiple airstones into the resevoir, i'm no expert but more oxygen to the roots the better one would think.

Walmart pet/fish section is the hydro's friend.

Has nothing to do with nutes. Adding O2 to the water is one of the best things you can do for your water.
