Air-Cooled Reflector Question

Hey everyone I hope you’re doing well.

I’m running a 5x5 with a 1kw SE HPS in a cheap barn style reflector. 6 inch hurricane fan hooked right to the carbon filter and exhausted through maybe a foot of duct 90° straight up into the room, passive intake. The tent is in a basement room with no windows, door to the room open and a floor fan blowing in air from the living space.

It gets pretty hot in the tent sometimes up in the mid 80s then dips to high 60s/low 70s with lights off. I haven’t had any major issues because of it but I’m sure things would be better if I could bring the max temp down and reduce the swing between lights on/off.

How much of a difference would a cooled reflector make with this setup? I’d rather not fuck around cutting holes in the walls to vent outside.

Just trying to see if it’s worth it before spending the money.

Thanks!

If you don't vent the hot air outside then it will heat up the room you are pulling your intake air from. That will reduce the effectiveness of your ventilation system.

If you don't want to vent outside then you will need an air conditioner to move the heat outside. A portable would also require that you vent outside, a window unit would require, well, a window lol, and a minisplit would require the condenser unit be outside and you have to run the lineset through the wall.

So if you aren't willing to make holes in the wall you are looking at the window AC unit. Know that these don't do well when it gets cold outside so your system wouldn't work in the winter.

thanks guys. I‘m gonna try venting to an adjacent room and see if that does the trick.
