After Washington pot legalization vote, prosecutor to throw out 175 marijuana possess

On Friday afternoon, King County prosecutor Dan Satterberg issued a statement saying he would be dismissing all misdemeanor marijuana cases.
“Today’s decision will impact 175 King County cases that are currently filed or referred for filing involving individuals age 21 and older who possessed one ounce or less of marijuana,” Satterberg said. “With the passage of I-502, marijuana possession of one ounce or less by individuals age 21 and older will become legal in the state of Washington on Dec. 6.”
Satterberg said that dismissing these cases is the right thing to do in light of Tuesday’s vote.
“Although the effective date of I-502 is not until Dec. 6, there is no point in continuing to seek criminal penalties for conduct that will be legal next month,” Satterberg said.
Shortly after Satterberg’s announcement, King County Sheriff Steve Strachan issued a separate statement saying county deputies would no longer be arresting and charging people over 21 who have 1 ounce of pot on them.
“Now that the initiative has passed, and now that the prosecutor’s office won’t be charging the individuals, we will also not focus on behavior that will be legal under Washington state law after Dec. 6th,” said Strachan.
There are 12 municipalities that contract with the King County Sheriff’s Office for police services. It remains the policy decision of the municipal attorneys and policy-makers of those cities to determine how they will proceed between now and Dec. 6, Strachan said. This decision only affects the deputies working in unincorporated King County

Just don't smoke in your car. That's really the only thing that will lead them to wanting to test you for a cannabis "DUI". King county is going out of its way to not bust on pot it seems. From my experience here in king county, it's pretty much already like this, now the cops literally just don't give a fuck here.

Where the fuck do you live? If you have a bag in your car and they pull you over for what ever I dont know looking like a cunt or what ever they usually pull you over for and they smell it your geting tested it has nothing to do with any smoke. I have a friend that was just blood tested for looking tired on a speeding stop this last week. Time to get informed.

I am happy for the people being let off, but concerned how this prosecutor inrerpreted the law. 502 from what I understood was you could only legly have weed from the state. If these poeple didn't buy their weed from a state authorized store then they still broke the law. I am only concerned because I don't want dip shit authorities to "interpret" the law to their benifit to fuck us later! Beware of laws that have to be interpreted cus whoever has the most money has the best interpreter!

looks like we sparked the nation....... on its way to decriminalize/regulate for 21 and aboves recreational use.

How many other states will be hopping on the marijuana regulation bandwagon.......$$$$$$$$

I say within 2 yrs time.... over 1/2 the country will regulate

State legislators from Rhode Island and Maine on Thursday will join the Marijuana Policy Project on a teleconference press call to announce that they are introducing similar bills to tax and regulate marijuana in their state legislatures

I doubt it will be that fast. MMJ has been around since 1996 and like 19 states have laws after 16 years. I would bet Oregon and CA and NV follow pretty quickly.

They are interpreting the law correctly and objectively. Buying marijuana has never been illegal. Possessing, cultivating, and selling it were, until the former was made legal by 502. If you buy marijuana, you haven't done anything illegal according to the state of WA, but the person who sold it to you has.

You are right, 502 says "retail sales to the general public are not allowed". Just because the cops didn't see the sale of MJ they don't care? I just hope the law makers iron out some good regulations and some solid DUI standards. I just care about the DUI laws, I don't want to get a DUI for smoking meds or eating a brownie the night prior! No matter what the fuck any of us think 502 is here and we need to support and make it work here if we hope for other states to follow us! Or Hope like hell Colorado does it right!

They care, but they key is that SALES are not allowed. So the dealer gets in trouble, and the buyer doesn't. If a Seattle cop sees a drug deal go down, the policy is that he/she should go after the seller only, because he was the only one breaking the law by selling unlicensed marijuana. I agree with you about DUI laws. I do really like that I-502 earmarks a whole bunch of money for UW and WSU to study marijuana so hopefully we can get a real scientific standard that makes sense.

I just hope that England follows suit. It's starting to get tedious having people get busted with 4 plants for personal use. State of it.

this is going to be very interesting how are they going to open up 1 store?? If they can not be within 1/2 mile of certain places

Under I-502, the Liquor Control Board will not license cannabis businesses that are within 1,000 feet of :

schools, parks, playgrounds, libraries, child daycare centers, recreation centers, public transit centers, and game arcades

where can you open up a store???

If a person opens a daycare center they force the marijuana store to move!!!
