Aeroponics

My knowledge of aeroponics you could fit on the back of the proverbial postage stamp. All I know is that the roots are hanging freely and are sprayed regularly with nutrients. I'm only on my first grow and I opted for soil because it seemed simpler. We are going to be using aeroponics on our second grow which will be starting, fingers crossed, around the beginning of December.

I know that a complete aeroponics unit to house twenty plants can be bought for 309 pounds Sterling. Probably about $500. We're going to be buying two. So hopefully in a couple-or-three months I will know considerably more.

Everything I've heard about aeroponics is good. The yields are supposed to be amazing; and let's be honest, that's why we are all doing it. The more you've got the more you can smoke.

I apologise to anyone clicking onto this thread for in depth info on aeroponics... I just thought the forum looked lonely with just hydroponics.

aeroponics and hydro are a fun setup, I myself do not know much about them but I believe GN and potroast do, silvernomad as well probbly.

For me soil is the way I go.

Hey Man, aeroponics IS hydro! Just one method. Even the passive systems, like a bucket of nutes with an airstone, and the roots are constantly submerged, is a method of hydro.

NFT is another method. Nutrient Film Technique is a trough of nutes flowing by and the roots are bathed in it.

I bring up NFT because most of the 'aero' systems that I've seen are actually combinations of the 2 methods. Like the General Hydroponics AeroFlo2, I call it an enhanced NFT. The sprayers roil up the nutes flowing thru the tube, like super oxygenation, rather than spray all over the roots.

I have several clients who have built their NFT systems using that AeroFlo as a guide. They use plastic square fence posts (8 feet long) for the tubes.

NFT and Aero sytems are a very advanced method, and you must be dedicated to quick responses when things go wrong.

HTH

This geezer that's sold us on the idea made out like we could go on holiday for two weeks come back and all would be done for you. Anyway Pot' thanks, you've cast enough doubt in my mind that I'm going to have to do lots of research. Definitely the way to go though, aeroponics.

So the plant breathes in Co2, and the roots breathe in oxygen? What happens to the oxygen after the roots breathe it in, is Co2 a by-product that is then transferred to the plant? If so, does this also work vice-versa?

I really shoulda listened more in Biology at school.

That two week holiday stuff is crap! Especially with aero, a system that grows so fast will use a lot of water. If your reservoir is extra large, you can leave it alone for a couple of days, maybe. But if nothing else, you will need to top off your res with fresh water regularly.

That's just reservoir maintenance, there are many other things that need to be done to maintain a garden.

Yeah, the roots need O2 and the foliage needs CO2. I don't care what happens inside the plant, just what happens on the buds! :bigjoint:

I had a 40 gallon reservior on mine. I couldnt even make it a week. For 120 plants it drank about 10 gallons a day. I had an ebb and flow system with about 8 plants and I could go 2 weeks with them. I had it set up like that cause I worked out of town a lot. It prolly had a 5 gallon reservior. It was cool to come back and see them. You could definitely see the new growth.

So I'll need to make a reservoir,,, but I wouldn't want to leave the plants for even a day without checking their progress. I check them all intimately every day, I can't imagine myself being any different with the next crop especially as it's getting more complicated. My partner-in-cultivation is with this crop virtually 24 hours a day, and I know he's in there checking them over regularly, monitoring the temperature, checking for abnormalities. he's a beginner like myself, just a long time friend. We'd discussed growing before but just needed the right place to set it up. I couldn't do it at mine because if ever my dealing was alerted to the police... I mean a couple of oz of skunk you can easily hide. A mini cannabis farm you can't. So when his partner walked out with the kids we suddenly had a prime spot for the grow. Obviously there was a certain amount of greaving time. Anyway this grow has brought him back to life, he's reinvigourated. He has ambition.
Thanks for the help with the aero', I'm still going to go ahead, might try a small one first. Definitely try a small one first. Cheers lads.

Hey Jimmy. Hang on dude. You need to start your own thread. Put a poll on it and you can win some white widow seeds. If you want I can split this thread for you. I got to go to work but I will check back here later.http/www.rollitup.org/contests/1129-free-white-widow-seeds-sept.html#post5825

I am not too sure how all this works yet. Could you do that for me? I would appreciate it!!!
Thanks

I've been using hydro DWC in my small closet grow for about five years now and have been very happy with the results. Prior to that, I was growing in soil. A friend recently converted his DWC system over to aero and got amazing results. He pulled over 15 ounces off of six plants that finished about 2.5 feet tall. I'm about to start my first aero grow myself. Picking up the rooted cuttings tomorrow from a friend. Trainwreak and Cindy-99. :)

potroast brings up a very good and is one of the reasons I'm an aero-junkie! I use a system called an AeroMaid which I designed myself which is a hybrid called aero-hydroponic which has roots hanging in an air gap as well as submerged in the nutrient solution. Now potroast mentioned NFT in aero heres one reason why I love it so much, you see as the nutrient solution hits the roots it runs down creating the same exact affect as NFT a nutrient film with one destinct advantage increased oxygen availability! I've been growing 30+ years now 20+ have been exclusively hydroponic with the last 5 seriously addicted to aeroponics, it rocks as long as you have a grip on the low down. 1-2 inches a day is common when dialed in!

But all these results you speak of can be gotten in soil. 15oz off 6 plants isn't all that much, and 1-2" growth isn't either. I'd heard of amazing yields but 15oz off of 6 plants isn't really anything to speak of.

1-2" of growth a day is the best you'll ever see to say it isn't all that much takes directly away from your legitimacy bro! There is no comparision in growth rates to say there is is well peculiar. Much respects but I'm betting your a soil gardener and probably a very good one at that.

even as a newbie i have seen the affects of an aerosystem done properly, and 2pounds in a 3ft by 3ft space intrigued me to start 1 myself. nutrients are clearl;y the difference here. i am so inspired:rolleyes:

I'm soon to be starting a large dwc grow. 48 plants (24 veg and 24 flower). I already have 1 plant at my personal grow, and after only a week I am really impressed with the growth rate. It seems to growing faster than the hydro's and it isn't in as good a position.

I am using a bubble disk rather than air stones, and the disk is really impressive. The bubbles easily shoot up 4-5 inches from the surface, so I was thinking that with this sort of gap I need to keep the water level to this height. It seems to me that this system is a sort of dwc/aero hybrid, where the top 4-5 inches of root will be exposed fully to air but will be constantly sprayed by the bubbles. Does anyone use these disks, and if so do you think they are better than the stones?

Another good thing about the disks is that the air tube fastens directly to it so you have no worries of root growing up your tube.

I will be starting a basic DWC grow next Month and shortly after the New Year I will be buying an Aerflo 2 36 site. I'm still stuck on testing gear. the Bluelab truncheons have come highly recommended to be but I think I'll start with something cheaper to get going.

What do you use for ph/EC meter(s)?
