Aerogarden's lights or Mod it to CFL's???? What do you think?

I just got an aerogarden 7, and I think the lights that come with it do not look very good.

Each bulb (2) in the aeogarden is rated for 26 Watts and outputs 1560 lumens, and the total output is 78 watts and 4680 lumens over an area of approximately 16x9 inches or 1 square foot.

I wanted to Mod this aerogarden a bit (from a aerogarden light socket mod kit off of eBay to replace the lights that came with the aerogarden), and not sure if the lights I want to replace with would be better or worse for my 3 plants that I have in it now.

The lights I was going to put in instead of what came with the aerogarden are;

2-6500K 75W CFL
COLOR TEMP-6500K
ENERGY USED-18W=75W
AVERAGE LIFE-8000HRS PER CFL
LIGHT OUTPUT-1170 LUMENS

I know the Lumens are lower, do think they are better or worse than what came with the aerogarden?

I was going to also use 2 side lights;

2-5000K 60W CFL
COLOR TEMP 5000K
ENERGY USED 14W=60W
AVERAGE LIFE 10000 HRS PER CFL
LIGHT OUTPUT-800 LUMENS

Any infor, or am I totally wrong?...

Just setting this up while waiting to purchase a
250 W HPS SUPER HPS HYDROPONICS SODIUM GROW LIGHTS BULB

1 more question... if i do get the HPS light....do i need a special socket to avoid a fire, or can it just go into a "work light ballast)?

Right now I have the 2 reg aerogarden lights on (that came with it) as well as the 2 6500k on the sides...is this overkill?..or should i just leave it the way i have set up now and NOT mod the aerogarden?

I would leave the lights alone if the ones it comes with are the 6700k for veg. If not then use them for bloom. If your looking to purchase something get something that are minimal in height so that way your plant has as much height as possible. 4 or 5 2 ft fluoro's would work. Can purchase cheaply on Amazon or eBay.

You did not tell us what kelvin those bulbs are now did you.

You have 18x2 = 36 watts up top. Then 14x2 = 28. == 64 watts.

You then said each bulb is rated at 26 watts, then said (2) how does 2 x 26 = 78???

They sell the socket you want online, its called a no reflector socket.

You sir/maam do not make sense.

So basically your building a veg setup. If those are veg bulbs in the aerogarden then why worry cause yours was going to be less, assuming the 78 watt feature.

I have never tried this but the bad thing about those is that there are no sides anywhere I assume. So the light is wasted on the edges. Why not box it? Cardboard box with no top and bottom, paint the inside with flat white paint and voila extra light from that top lighted garden.

Tada

The info I gave for the aerogarden lights is all they give you both in the instruction manual as well as their web site..I have tried to figure that out all over google...and no one knows...so that is the most info i can get on the lights that came with it..besides a model #..lol . True..do not understand 2x26=78 weird! (never noticed that) but thats what it says on the webpage...I just cut and pasted.

Do not need them in a box as they are in a closet with flat white paint..light is VERY bright when opening the door :)

I say save your money for the HPS and get a switchable ballast if you can. So that way in the future you can run MH for veg and HPS for bloom.

You can find great deals on used ones at your local pawn shops if its legal in your state. Also online used on craiglist is a good place to check in larger cities usually and eBay.

wow..switchable ballasts are a pretty penny on eBay..know a cheaper place?...what do they usually go for and what type i looking to get?..I'm in Ontario, Canada so we can basically buy anything...even seeds are sold at seed bank shops here that are legal to purchase...not really much restriction...authorities here do not really care about pot smokers/growers when it is grown for personal use.

Im using an Aerogarden Extra. I use the lights it comes with PLUS Ive added a clamp light with a 42w cfl on the side. Ive also added an air-pump with air-stone and added some reflective material around the set-up. Also I dont recommend the AG nutes, Im using XNUTRIENTS. Also going to need a timer to switch to 12/12 when the time comes. I personally started the last couple grows 12/12 from seed, keeps the plant smaller due to the height restrictions in the unit.
Aww well, dont know if I answered it completely, I ramble when lit, hehe.
