I know alot of you have questions about girls/boys....When is the earliest you can tell a plant is female? 30 days? 2 weeks into flowering? Does it have to be in vegging or flowering growth? Well, Let's gather some people who mainly want to see PICS of the stages, w/ a small description. Feel free, professionals, to make comments, as I am a beginner too. :weed:

Anyway, here are my babes below....

In this thread, I'm going to track the stages of flowering w/ up close pics, like an E-Book, for those beginners who want to know the stages step by step.
This is only an early-sexing thread..so please stick to topics on that or male/female sexing advice :)

I am now showing the nodes that have the two little STIPULES starting to form (the sex parts will show behind these two little stipules, which reveal no sex at this point). #2 & #3 show the best example of the protruding stipules. They are about 4 weeks old and in their vegging stage. In 2-4 weeks I will be flowering and they will show signs of sex. They are for the most part all feminized. I believe I will be topping/ supercropping/ or growing sideways for most of my plants, if I have the space. Stay posted!!!!

Good plants, though the last one seems to be kind of small for 5 weeks old, maybe? Also, those two things you see sticking out are stipules, not calyxes or the pistils that come out of them. Stipules in MJ seem to be purely vestigial - having no discernible function. I made that mistake at first, too. "At first" meaning, like.. three weeks ago.

You are right, though, that when gender shows it will happen in the notch just behind them, between a growth shoot and the main stem.

Crap, guys are so amazing at this growing stuff.

So I just edited my first post. FYI, FIRST POST is correct...the stipule is the right term for what I am showing in the pics.

Ha! Ok well yeah they aren't flowering yet. This will be helpful for alot of people :)

The Last pic is about 3-4 weeks old. She's strapped down as of yesterday :0 !!!!!
My oldest are 5 weeks...not shown here. sorry
THANK U!!!!!!!!

Hey, we all have to learn and pass on the knowledge. We're all noobs at first. Like I say, a month ago I didn't know a stipule from a staple gun.

Good thread idea.

I am very new also and am eagerly looking forward to this grow journal style discussion on sexing. I have two Blueberry plants that are being LST'd and are doing great. I have the most archaic set up. My intent, as this is my first time, was to just see what happens in the process so that when I up grade my "window box" I won't be butchering anything valuable to me. I am now at the point where it would be wonderful to know if it's a boy or girl. I have the text book... but let's see it real time!

Yeah some of us are visual learners. I'm both but REALLY appreciate pictures that just don't show the full blown pre-flowering. I want to see it from the start!

Silly question, but what does LST stand for? Is that the topping of the plant? Thanks!

LST = Low-stress training. It involves getting the plant to grow lower and bushier by tying down stems and forcing side growth to become vertical growth.

You create multiple colas, and if you keep them all at the same height they'll all receive equal growth hormone and you end up with multiple "main" colas in a short space.

some real info for the newbies.
Sexing the Plants
The female plant is more desirable than the male for marijuana cultivation. The female flowering clusters (buds) are usually the most potent parts of the harvest. Also, given room to develop, a female generally will yield twice as much marijuana as her male counterpart. More of her weight consists of top-quality buds.
Because the female yields marijuana in greater quantity and sooner you can devote your attention to nurturing the females. Where space is limited, such as in indoor gardens and small outdoor plots most growers prefer to remove the males as soon as possible, and leave all available space for the females. To harvest sinsemilla (seedless female buds), you must remove the male plants before they mature and release pollen.
Differences in the appearance of male and female Cannabis become more apparent toward maturation. During the seedling stage, gender is virtually impossible to distinguish, although in some varieties the male seedling may appear slightly taller and may develop more quickly.
We know of no way to discover gender with any certainty until each plant actually forms either pollen-bearing male flowers or seed-bearing female flowers. However, certain general characteristics may help. Using guidelines like the following, growers who are familiar with a particular variety can often predict gender fairly accurately by the middle stage of the plant's life.Early Vegetative Growth
After the initial seedling stage, female plants generally develop more complex branching than the male. The male is usually slightly taller and less branched. (Under artificial light, the differences in height and branching are less apparent throughout growth.)
Some plants develop a marked swelling at the nodes, which is more common and pronounced on female plants. Middle Vegetative Growth
In the second to fourth months of growth, plants commonly form a few isolated flowers long before the actual flowering stage begins. These premature flowers are most often found between the eighth and twelfth nodes on the main stem. Often they appear near each stipule (leaf spur) on several successive nodes, at a distance two to six nodes below the growing tip. These individual flowers may not develop fully and are often hard to distinguish as male or female flowers. The fuzzy white stigmas of the female flower may not appear, and the male flowers seldom opens but remains a tightly closed knob. However, the male flower differs from the female; it is raised on a tiny stalk, and the knob is symmetrical. The female flower appear stalkless and more leaflike.
The presence of premature female flowers does not assure that the plant is a female, but premature male flowers almost always indicate a male plant. Unfortunately, it is much less common for male plants to develop premature male flowers than for female flowers to appear on either plant. For example, in one garden of 25 mixed-variety plants, by age 14 weeks, 15 plants showed well-formed, premature female flowers with raised stigmas. Eight of these plants matured into females and seven became males. Only two plants showed premature male flowers and both of these developed into males. The eight remaining plants did not develop premature flowers or otherwise distinguishable organs until the actual flowering stage at the age of 21 weeks. From these eight, there were four females, three males, and one plant bearing both male and female flowers (hermaphrodite). It does seem, however, that plants bearing well-formed female flowers, on several successive node, usually turn out to be females. Preflowering
In the week or two prior to flowering and throughout flowering, many common marijuana varieties follow two general growth patterns which depend on gender. With these varieties, you can tell gender by the spacing between the leaves (internodes). For the female, the emphasis is on compact growth. Each new leaf grows closer to the last, until the top of the plant is obscured by tightly knit leaves. The male elongates just prior to showing flowers. New growth is spaced well apart and raises the male to a taller stature. This may by the first time the male shows its classic tall, loosely arranged profile.

yeah I'm already doing the LST with mine.......I just tied down another girl :)

Q-Are you topping them at all or just training? I hear topping is great for Blueberries...for better yield.

I am just trying some stuff before my serious attempt at it. I just wanted to see the growth patterns and limitations of a plant. I've even snapped one in half! Both halves are growing strong just like a worm!! I am just training the plants and trying to decide the best configuration for my space. I am building a cab to suit my needs.. now that I have a good idea what they are.

I read mixed reviews on topping. Of course I'll experiment for myself... but right now I have two happy (and slightly abused) plants that will yield at least something for my effort. I've got 4 tops that i've tied down again... just to see what happens and then I'll flower in a week.

I'm having fun and not taking it too seriously yet. Different story though, when I spend money on seeds... those girls will have to be pampered!!

yeah i tied down 3 right now....hoping to double yield. I haven't tried snapping the stem yet..maybe i will with one once it is bigger. how many inches tall are u going to begin flowering?????? I think once my smallest is 16 inches i will start the 12/12!

I tied em up last night and I'm gonna let them go to about 16 and flower also. I snapped one by accident when i was tying it down (lol)... then i put the peice in some stim root and tossed it into a jiffy pot... now it's got more roots than branches!!! I'm having lots of fun with this.

I think I am going to let them go about 13 or 14 instead because i've seen people start at 12 and they get HUGE...seriously can grow 2-3X BIGGER !!!!!!!

So you accidentally topped it? Send pics to my journal if you want :)

Sure, I'll post some pics when I get caught up. I am in panic mode trying to get a flowering chamber set up. Built a two stage cabinet this weekend from some plans i found on line. It's gonna work great. But i have to get it finished ASAP and start flowering to learn that process so I am ready for some real growing.

Here is a pic (not a very good one) of a BB going through LST (low stress training) It's a really cool process that I think I will try to perfect in the future. It's about a 20" plant right now, but it's only like 8" high. (I just have to be more gentle next time... LOL) A word of advice to anyone wanting to do this.... use a method of tie down that is really easy to untie without damamging the plant.... pipe cleaners, hooks that just stick into the soil.... evs. Once the stem increases in circumference (sp?) it's really hard to get butcher string off!:?

Hey Spaz. I have been doing the LST with most of my plants...and a couple are supercropped (still alive!). I'll be lolli-popping a little bit. I love all this ganja-lingo. Anyway, check out the girls. They are DEF. girls!!

NEW PICS------> My Sea of Green (soon to be Scrog=Screen of Green) Supercropped/LST (sideways grow), Notice the fine, white pistils--- for all those still checking out my thread to learn about sexin' :)

Continue to check back and subscribe to see updates on the process of sexing your babes...
