8hr of sun outdoor vs indoor

bought my first house last spring (luckily just in time), and i have a kick ass fenced garden area which i built a small greenhouse in. I have a few zkittles autos im getting ready to throw out there but im wondering if its even gonna be worth it. I would say the greenhouse gets maybe 6-8hr of direct sunlight and a few more hours of spotty partly shaded light coming through trees. Ive never grown outdoor but ive always heard that there is just no competing with nature and if you have the opportunity, grow outdoor. Other conditions are fine. Since these are autos, they will finish before it gets cold at night. I have a fan on controller to keep optimal temp and humidity in there.

So what about the partial light? Is it still worth doing it outside or would i be better off staying indoor with optimal artificial light? Plant count is limited so thats why i cant really just do both. If i can get comparable results, it really would be nice to use free sunlight

6-8 direct light is fine...you'd be surprised how well they'd do with less.

do it, so then you have that experience under your belt and then you know indoor and outdoor, win win

There's pros and cons to outdoor. Imo it's hard to beat the sun for veg growth.Even w some partial sun hrs. I'm seeing 3-4 inches a day under similar conditions right now

Build up your stash with outdoor then grow indoor in the winter

I only get 6-7 hours of direct sunlight because of neighbors trees to the east and west of me, and last year's all auto grow averaged about 6oz per plant. I grew in the ground, in raised beds. I also had to use bug netting to keep the moths off, we have bad worm issues here, I mention that because the bug netting cuts/filters about 25% of the sunlight. So even with those limitations I was happy with the harvest. I'm growing in a greenhouse/high tunnel structure this year for the first time, it's presenting different challenges. I'd love to see some pictures of your set up.

And I agree with @Herb & Suds - summer outdoor, winter indoor, it's the best of both worlds. As a side note about plant counts, I'm also in Oregon, and no one is counting. Unless someone complains... so know your neighbors.

Easy now but when I first got a medical grow I was by the book and always looking over my shoulder

all good I get it. was half joking. just woke up and am a little grumpy until I get a few spliffs in me.

still it's a pet peeve. your answer is my case in point. how is this fucked up shitstem going to make you feel guilty about growing a plant that is medicine? do they tell you how many beers you can have in your fridge or how many tomatoes you are allowed to grow in your garden?

why should I only be able to have a 1 month supply of herb for my families medicinal needs? who decided that? what if I can't grow for a few months bc I get busy w work? then my son gets no medicine while the stash runs low? have already been in this situation once, never again. I'm more afraid of not having meds for him when he needs it than I am of LEO.

just frustrated that we still getting discriminated against, and we are living in fear that if we plant too many seeds we will go to jail.

Op and the rest of us should be able to grow and store as much herb as they need for whatever period of time.

I have a similar situation and I am reminding myself to not let growing perfect plants get in the way of growing good plants. Sure most of my yard is shaded out by big oak trees but the autos will still auto and even light airy buds or small yields are still an opportunity to learn and sample different terps.

i absolutely hear you on that. The plant count limit doesnt even accomplish anything. Someone wanting to grow and sell illegally can grow 4 trees and harvest 10 pounds if they do it right. Someone wanting to grow their own medicine are the ones being hurt by it. This is for my wife and she needs a variety to treat whatever she is dealing with. The optimal way to handle that would be growing multiple seeds of each strain you want, pick best phenos, keep those as mothers long term so you can take cuttings when your supply of that strain runs low. pretty much not possible with 4 count limit. Sure i can get enough quantity off 4 plants, but not in the variety i need and being able to keep phenos around when i find ones that worked really well for her.
As for the neighbor, really nice guy and 90% sure hes a pot head. Im tempted to just talk to him about it. Hes also a gardener and i dont doubt he would like to grow too. Here in montana we just went legal this year. Having a fellow neighbor grower would be really useful. Not only trade flower, but also be able to keep more genetics between the 2 of us.

Im guessing my conditions here in NW montana wont be too different from you Oregonians. Season is short for photos which makes me want to do autos, but im still tempted to just try a faster photo and either give light dep early on, or bring inside to finish. If i started a photo now, i could have a monster plant to bring inside early september and finish off under a 1000watt. One thing that worries me about that is the shock from light change. Guy at hydro store told me its not uncommon for a plant to just completely stop for like 2 or 3 weeks when going from outside with sunlight to inside with artificial. Definitely dont want a delay like that mid flower. Maybe best strategy is to bring it in earlier so if it gets shocked, it has time to recover before going into heavy flower. For now i think i will just throw a few zkittles autos out there and see how they do.

exactly my point. how are we supposed to be able to pop a pack of seeds and find a keeper pheno that you could make clones of.

i'm very glad to be able to get 'elite' cuts and genetics from dispos and friends, and feminized seed of proven breeders. but sometimes we need to be able to go back to basics and hunt regs ourselves. not to mention, being able to breed and select our own offspring, and breed them so we have our own seed stock.

there would be no current hype 'exotic' genetics or cannabis industry if it wasn't for those original old head warriors who were breeding and exchanging cultivars at the the cannabis clubs and in the hills and valleys putting in work because they loved this plant.

everything else just leaves us at the mercy of corporate interests who by design are going to bottleneck and monoculture everything for profit. i try to make sense of it all but that's where the double middle fingers get thrown up. gonna do what I have to do regardless of what they think.

i hope you find some killer meds for your wife this summer, and that you and the neighbor can collab and get some nice plants going.
