I just want your guy/girls opinion on how many plants you'd grow with a 400watt hps, grow area is 5X5X7

It all depends on your style. I would first of all get that area down to 3x3 or 4x4 at the most for a 400watt light.

You could grow SOG style and fit about 36 plants or more under the light. You could grow some nice bushes and do anywhere from 4 to 8 plants depending on the size of plants after veg. You could grow a SCROG style and fill the whole area with 2 plants.

Height may be an issue. I don't know...you haven't given us much to go on. Seed? Clone? Hydro? Soil?

8 is fine...but get rid of the mirrors. They cause hot spots. You are much better off with flat white everywhere instead.

Without a light mover, your growing ability with a 400w hps is about a 20-22 inch radious from the bulb...any pot plant beyond 22" is not getting sufficient lumens to grow...depends upon how big your plants are...I do 4 white widows with no problem under a 430w hps sonagro...but you could easily do more in a sog style grow....

BTW, I heard mirrors is a no no...the glass eats the needed spectrums of light...flat white paint or mylar are the way to go...

well how big is the closet and yeild depends on a number of factors ..... strain, food, temp, and other unpredicatble things.

No sweat Gardenman...it wasn't directed anywhere but at the post I quoted. Just didn't want someone to think mirrors were good for light reflection.

I have a 400W and am growing 5 plants, abou 3 and 1/2 foot tall, n o problem. even have a 5 foot tomato plant in there, not getting much light, but I dont care hes not steelinmg it from my pot!!!
Id keep the room size the way it is, and just grow 4-6 plants, than bu a second 400 watter when you can, then you can do some real good things :)

instead of buying another light, try a light mover... you can always get another light if you increase your space...a 400w with a light mover can cover an 8'x4' space just fine, a 4'x4' space without the mover...

For the price of a light mover and the constant repairs and bullshit that go along with them...why not just get a bigger light?

i can only go by with what works for me, i know many people are going to jump on me for this but i will never grow without mirrors again. I use to use mylar and the white walls but when i added mirrors lets just say the proof is in the pudding, :mrgreen:

*As for the hotspots i have heard of this but never had a problem.

let the bashing begain:peace:
