400 watt hps enough for this space?????? +rep

ok here is the deal i have a box 40''x32''x5 feet for my flowering chamber with roughly 6 plants and i currently have a 400w hps with a magnetic ballast in a cooltube(from HTG) with a 4 inch inline fan temps are doin fine(they get high in the peak of summer) my question is is a 400w hps enough for that space or should i upgrade to a 600w digital ballast??? does the 600w produce much more heat?? will my cooltube and 4 inch inline be enough to keep the temps stable or should i not waste the money on it and keep the 400?? +rep to everyone who has a helpful reply :) tyy all comments are welcome

I have the same problem, 400w, middle of summer, heat issues. One way around it is to add a window a/c to your growbox. Is that an option for you? (a/c also lowers humidity, added benefit)

The 400w will be great for 6 plants I have seen it work great before. You could upgrade to a 600w for more penetration but it will probably produce a little bit more heat. I would recommend a 6in inline intake fan for your cool-tube along with a oscilating fan for the plants.

With that size space and the number of plants, I would recommend that you go with the 600w light, but you are going to need to upgrade your fan to at least a 6" inline fan. With the 600w you will see better and fuller growth which is going to lead to bigger yields. You will need to upgrade the fan because the 600w light will put out more heat and for that space, I really don't see a 4" inline being able to completely cool down your area or refresh the air enough. i have a small fridge for a dorm would that work just cut a 6 inch hole on the side of it remove the freezer rack adjust temps to the grow box when everything will b running? just a though what do u think anone tried this?

This is a good read for choosing the right fan for your grow room. Your rooms about 43 cubic feet so you could get away with a good 4" inline fan and replace air every 4-5 times a minute. A 6" would be a little overkill but thats not always a bad thing either with ventilation!

Each fan has a rating that tells you how many cubic feet of air per minute (CFM) it will move. When dealing with above average temperatures you will want your fan to exchange the grow room air 3-5 times in one minute, so for a room that is 40 cubic feet, a fan that is capable of moving 120-200 cfm (cubic feet per minute) is recommended. If you only want to replace depleted levels of co2 and are growing in a closet using fluorescents, one room change per five minutes (divide room size by 5) will be adequate.

To calculate your room size, multiply Width by Length by Height, this will give you the CFM rating required for one room change per minute.

Air that’s exhausted will be replaced by fresh air, which is drawn from

Passive Intakes-
located opposite the exhaust at the floor of your grow room (Recommended for closet grows) or forced in using another blower (recommended for larger grow rooms).

For internal circulation oscillating fans are In my opinion the most efficient devices for circulating air in a room. The gentle back and forth sway of the fan is very beneficial for the developing plants. These fans tend to keep anaerobic moulds down by constantly freshening any potentially stagnant air. Home improvement centres carry a large array of various types and styles of air-moving fans, there are wall-mounted styles available and most are relatively inexpensive.

NOTE: To convert CFM to CMH use the folowing formula CFM X 0.03 X 60 = CMH

Here is a thought could you utilize the current 400w mag ballast to run a 400w CMH bulb along with adding the new digital to run 600HPS? you could probably run intake and exhaust together? not sure-what I mean is run intake 4-6 " from floor to first cooltube then onto next CT and out to top of cab-If cool tubes are installed/sealed correctly there should be no smell to worry about and you can vent out of cab into room? Maybe boosters on both ends? I thought I read folks saying with cool tubes and 400w HPS in smaller cabs was the way 2 solve heat issues? Is it worth the cool tube expense? I too am looking into very small AC for the summer months as bottom line no matter how many fans you have 80 degree air coming in will be at least that going out Happy Growing to all :)

get a 600w dimmable ballast.
You can take advantage of the extra lumens and get fatter buds when temps allow.

When it gets hot in the summer you can dial it down to 60 or 75%

hydrofarm phantoms are nice

well i just purchased a lumatek 600w digital dimmable for 160 on ebay good ass deal anyone have any recommendations on some 6inch silent inline fans?
