400 watt grow box cooling

I have just build a 4' wide 2.5' deep and 4' tall grow box. I added a 4" hole on the top and a 4 " hole on the bottom . My question is will a 4" inline fan/filter combo be sufficient enough to cool this box? or should i go with maybe a 6 " ? The light is a 400 watt HPS with no aircooled hood.

I would def go with at least a 6", I'm using a 4" in mine which is about half the size of yours and I ha issues. I put in a piece of glass and it dropped the temp 15 degrees. With the high output of heat from the hps, if you can't do independent cooling, have the fan right before the light to push the air out.

thanks i appreciate the feedback. +rep I think i will go with a 6" cutout then, just to be safe. Or i might just buy a new light that can be vented a little better

4" inline will cool the light just fine. The big question is how cool is the room the box is in. THAT is the determining factor of just how hot your grow box will be. The box will never be cooler than the temperature of the room it's in. So if your room is 80 degrees the box will never get below that, even if you have a 12" inline fan.

yeah that does make sense. good info. the room it will be in will be around 70 most of the time, and I think with the negative pressure it should cool it. we'll see

My room is around 65-75 and my tent is usually 70-80. That's with a 4" inline fan and a 400w.
