hey guys if i was to use a 400 w hps in a hydro system with 6 plants would that be ok to use throughout the entire process from seed to harvest? I know there are better things to use for veg and better things to use for flowering but will this produce overall good buds on a max of 6 plants at a time throughout the entire grow. thanks for answers in advance

You could use a 400 hps for seedlings, but from my experience it was much easier and cost efficient to run tube flourescents. 6 plants is alot depending on how big you are going to grow them. With my 400 when I used to run it, I only put about 4 in there. The 400 though I'm sure you can use it, is those tiny little plants going to use the power that 400 watts of HID on it?

That 400 power range for flowering always bothered me since I didn't feel it constitutes 400 watt mh or even investing in a 250 for veg. Little better now since i'm using a 400 and a 600.

the importance of light intensity is paramount in your grow achieving its growth potential.

The 400W HPS light is a highly suitable light for your 6 plants - generally, the guidance that I have seen written is a minimum 2000 lumen per sq. ft., 3000 better. Natural unobstructed sunlight is 10000 lumen per sq ft.

My grow is approx 6 sq ft and I use a single 400W HPS (55000 lumens) - closely approaching the natural sunlight.

but there is also plenty of evidence within the forum that has clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of other lighting options as more than suitable to growing some very comendable crops. the limiting factors are space, and heat, and in some cases, cost.

as with each of these efforts, everyones circunastances are unique, and there are many choices, each for very valid reasons.

From a light intensity and spectrum perspective, the HPS will grow a decent crop. given enuf water, air (o2 and co2), and nutrients - and sufficient light....the weed will grow....like a weed! hahahaha

Good luck and keep asking questions....as necessary.....we're all here to help if we can.

six small plants (like the lowrider strain you mention) i think would be OK. Anything else i think you'd be pushing it. Not because the light isn't powerful enough but because six plants will spread pretty wide.
