400 w hps question

I have two 400 w lights one mh and the other Is hps, the hps get quite a bit hotter then the mh because of the hood and also due to only have access to a small 6" IL booster fan and it Fu**s everythin up with the temp, well my question is would it be ok to run the hps for 30 45 mins then off for 5mins or so with recycle timer. Any help is apreciated.

I don't have too much experience, but I'd say probably not. First, you'd be seriously messing with your plants' light cycle. And second, it takes like, 15 minutes (maybe I'm wrong here, though I swear the manual for my light mentioned something about taking a while to warm up 100%) for HPS lights to fully kick on, so you are losing quite a bit of photosynthetic power in those initial startup times. So, you'd only be at full power for 30 minutes if you ran it for 45 minutes then shut it off. Plus (though I'm not entirely sure) the energy drain from HPS is the most when they first come on, so that might jack with your energy bill too.

Just my lame two cents.

Well the 400 w mh is on the whole time it's just the hps i was wantin to cycle on and off that way I could runn 800w I could even prob runn it for 1hr, but didn't think about the start up energy drain thing, bill is already pretty depressing

Well, I guess that might work, not too sure on flowering with a MH because of the blue spectrum the light puts out. It might adversely affect your yield bro.

Yeah thanks guys, I think I'll just stick with one hps for right now untill I can get some better exhaust fans, does any of u guys run mh and hps through flower or is it better to just run only hps throught flower cause I can run both lights hps when time comes.

Read up on it man. I've heard that the best thing to do is use MH AND HPS through your ENTIRE grow, from seed (or clone) through veg straight through to flower. All you do is just change the light cycle from 20/4 18/6 to 12/12. But good luck man. I'm sure you'll turn out some real big yields once you run both lights from start to finish.
