I often wondering why this kit is so cheap compared to the silverstar reflector kit. Are the bulbs that bad to justify spending 100 on a Phillips one? Been on the fence about this or a QB kit

I would spend the extra cash and get a sunsystem 315.........Philips ballast/3100k bulb combo to give you the industry's highest par output for a cmh, U position rated but they are designed for vert in the end

good luck

what do you mean with "u postition rated but they are designed for vert" thanks for the reply

I agree with @PSUAGRO. Took the words out of my mouth.

I'm closing in on week 7 of flower on my first go with cmh. I have 2 of the sun system 315s(vertically hung bulbs, not the horizontal ones, I'd stay away from those) with the philips 3100k bulb and a growers choice double ended 630w cmh. The frost along with size of the colas, especially for day 46, is pretty impressive.

I've been looking at these.. I'm intrigued by the combo of lfsw and fuzzy-logic and the lumen and spectrum maintenance claims..

CMH-315F low frequency, square wave digital 315W CMH grow light utilizes Fuzzy Logic 4th Generation ballast technology. The patent technology keeps lumen maintenance rate higher than 95% at 30,000 hours and maintains the initial spectrum so you can use your light much longer than traditional HPS grow light. We estimate that the lamp can be used for more than 10 years.

Thanks for the reply, and clarifying the vertical. Where are you growing? In a tent ? Cmh seems to be the best bet. led looks good but it is hard to find a reasonable canadian source

I'm not growing in a tent, open room.
What I mean by vertical is if you have your light hung, shining down on the plants and you look at the bulb, it'll either be pointing downward or laying sideways in the fixture. The styles that point the bulb downward (vertical) have much better light output than the fixtures with horizontal bulbs. The light is more intense.

Thank you, what is the coverage like for 1 of the sun system 315's? Do you get more coverage with a vertical bulb ?

It's solid for 3x3. Acceptable out to 3.5 for the outer branches in my opinion. My 315 actually has higher par readings @ 18" directly below the light than my double ended 630. The 630 has a little wider coverage though, solid for 4x4, acceptable for 4.5 but if you have a 5x5 tent it does well, I know of a couple people running it in a 5x5 and doing well. My area is more open so I loose a fair amount of light. I'm very happy with my 630de but put it this way, if I go buying anymore cmh's they will only be the vertical 315s. Much better efficiency of lighting per sq/ft, they cover almost as much as my 630 at half the watts.

I just bought a conversion kit to run in my existing hood. $200 for a Low Frequency, Square Wave Ballast, Phillips 315 3100k Agro Lamp, and E39 Mogul to PGZ18 Adapter. I'm looking to Mod my Sun Systems Dominator XXXL hood for two fixtures (have a old cool tube for cord, Mogul, and Mogul mount). Thinking of running a HPS/CMH hybrid in my 3.5x5 custom box.

When I was hunting, I found these white ballasts that we're a bit cheap looking, I ended up with this black Prism Lighting Science ballast. It appears to me that Prism sells their ballasts with Sun Systems hoods and Sun Systems sells their hoods with Prism Ballasts. I'm not expecting top of the line, but I'm thinking the ballast is decent enough to partner with Sun Systems.

I'm not doubting everyone who is saying go vertical, but I always thought there was a trade off there. Going horizontal, a large portion of the light is direct from the bulb and the rest reflected, with the upper portion reflected and degraded the worst. In a vertical, almost all the light is reflected and therefore, at least degraded a bit before use. I see a lot of CMH setups with Vertical setups and premium reflective material. If vertical is superior, why doesn't most HPS users go vertical? Has anyone tossed a meter under them and checked? Just Curious

Good point on going vertical and the light degrading, I have never really thought about that. Another question I have about running a 315w cmh, is the noise the ballasts produce, I have read that they are noisy from some people and pretty silent from others. Do you have any idea what kind of noise levels come from the ballast?
