PEOPLE PEOPLE stop buy the high watt cfl it better to use alot of the small ones In my grow box I use (10) 23watt 6500k and (6) 13 watt 2700k CFLs, its better this way cause you can move you lights to get the best from your bud. I got (7) 13 watt bulbs at Lowes for $8 and (5) 23watt bulbs for $9. And the y splitters I got by hand at Lowes. I put a fan on my lights to keep them cool and it help them last longer to. I box avg temp is 78F

These are the ones you need...enough said 250 watt or 850 watt equiv. i hate the use of equivulant values they make it too confusing and only use for marketing. Remember ALL cfl's whether spiral or U type can only put out a max of 63 lumin/watt the new rosebuds cfl's put out 75 lumins/watt

Reason why we should not refer to equivulant wattage is that the "equivulant wattage" is based on incandesant bulbs not MH,HPS or HID. No one uses incandesent for growing right?

The guy at Lowe's should probably stick to operating forklifts and selling ceiling fans. Bulbs don't give out watts, they draw watts from the outlet, watts being a measure of electricity. The reason they get confused about it is because CFL's are marketed almost always as a such and such true wattage bulb which is equivalent to a much higher wattage incandescant bulb. The fact of the matter is even the true wattage of a bulb can be deceptive as well. It's all about the lumens. When you're standing in the light bulb aisle trying to decide which bulb is going to suit your needs, read to see how many lumens it's pumping out. The rule of thumb I practice for a good value for a cfl is try not to pay more than $0.0014 per lumen (that's 14/1000 of a cent per lumen.) Something else I've observed is that the watt to lumen relationship is not a linear one. If a 40 watt cfl gives out 2600
lumens, that's not to say that an 80 watt bulb will give out 5200. It would probably be like 4700-4900. And the price for higher wattage cfl's also increases unproportionally. I've found that 26 watt bulbs seem to be the sweet spot, giving you 1700 lumens
each at around $2.50 each. If you ask me, the best idea is to buy a bunch of those because not only do you get a better lumdollar ratio, but you get a larger number of sources of light which means you get to illuminate a wider degree of angles ensuring that a larger percentage of your plant is receiving direct light.

Anybody feel free to paraphrase that, I know it's a huge chunk of text, sorry.
Well thats all well and good, but really if you want to go to the hassel of buying all those bulbs to make up the lumens. My friend has a 250 watt cfl red spec. It has 19700 lumens- pluug ang grow model! So if he were to scrap that use the 40w@1700 lumens, then he would have to set up 12 bulbs fixtures and fittings. I say may as well just use the 250watt without all that wiring and hassel!!! Just my thoughts! :•) .

Hello all, even though iam not a grower but iam a smoker of the wonderful herb from time to time, i like to see what goes into my weed. So i decided to some research on this whole lumen thing. The results i found were very interesting-- i see a lot of you on here have the notion that if for example say you had 10 x 26watt cfl, and 1 of the cfls =1700 lumen, then 10 of the cfls would be 17000 lumen-- Well this is NOT the case at all, that is not the way lumens are measured. Lumens are measured in intensity not amount. So basically having 10 cfls at 1700 lumen, means that you have 10 cfls that give off 1700 lumens per bulb and thats it, the intensity stays at 1700 lumen and does not reach any higher than that no matter how many bulbs you put into your room/ tent/ closet etc. This is a very interesting fact if you want the best grow possible and thinking that your getting more lumens than you think!!
