3.8 Trillion photographs

I was poking around.

One estimate I read was that mankind has taken 3.8 trillion photographs ever. (I made no attempt to verify sources - who would lie about that?)

Estimates for 2015 was that we took a full trillion of photos last year. So about 75% of all photos ever (my estimate - my calculus is way behind me.) have been taken in the last few years.

The definition for photograph is kinda ambiguous. It states that its "a picture made using a camera, in which an image is focused onto film or other light-sensitive material and then made visible and permanent by chemical treatment, or stored digitally". How can you store something digitally if your image is on film or light-sensitive paper? Are digital photos really photos? And if they are then wouldn't all digital images count as photos? If that is the case then there is an infinite number of photographs.
