i have 2 seedlings that are about 4 days old... for a plant this young what is the distance i should keep the hps from my babies?

minimum of 3 feet till they are about 2 weeks, then lower it about a foot. If you put your hand between the top of your plant and the light and it feels hot then raise it a bit till your hand only feels moderate warmth.
