250w or 400w light for a small closet grow?

I have started a new grow setup in a the back of my closet. The space is 3'x3'x5'. In that space I am hopping to have 4 plants. I am trying to decide if I should get a 400w hps or if A 250w would be enough and help me keep operating cost and Temperature down. There is an HTG Supply store near where I live, I have looked at their website and it seems pretty inexpensive. Any thoughts on their lights because $120+/- for a 250/400 seems pretty good.

htg has good lights, and more watts gives you more bud, but if your only growing four for personal use, might as well control heat and save some electricity and get a 250w. I have a 400w in a very similar setup w/out an intake/exhaust system and it can get overheated(Need to leave the door open for period to keep it down). If you can get an exhaust system, it might be worth it for more bud.
Basically, whichever you chose

Get the 250 unless you have an AC or really good ventilation. I veg under a 250w HPS and it works great, nice and compact and not very hot at all, I veg 12 plants under the 250.

If you can handle the temps and want some bigger buds then get the 400w, either way power is minimal and you probably wont notice much difference on the bill, maybe 10-20 with all the fans and everything.

Ok I am still on the fence on whether a 400w is worth it over a 250w for my grow. But I have a time, the HTG Supply store near me is remodeling until the 11th. On if the biggest thing holding me back from the 400w is heat. Now I know i could get a cooltube or the such, but that would eat up the rest of my grow budget(and i still need a few things). So I was wondering whether doing this would help at all?

I would be using 6" hose with a 6" inline fan rated at 250cfm. please let me know what you think or if you have a better idea on how to control the heat.

Those fans are rated for moving are, with no ducting it can move 250, with any ducting it is greatly reduced. They are meant to be used for booster fans to assist a larger main fan.

Also are you considering smell?

I think the best thing if you can afford it would be a 400w HPS with an air cooled hood, then you will need a carbon filter and a vortex fan. Put the fan directly on the filter, run ducting from the fan to the hood, from the hood out.

I use a compact 250w for veg (ballast and everything is in the hood, so it just has 1 power cable coming out the top) Its not air cooled but heat is never an issue with it.

as far as odor control...i have no idea what im gonna do yet. In my 1st two grows with CFLs i didn't do anything for odor control, but the each time it was only 2 plants under 20in tall so it wasn't too bad. Though this time im sure it will become an issue. Im gonna do some research and see what else besides carbon filters people are using with success. But at least on that I can wait til flowering to have a remedy in place. My lighting on the other hand I need to fix asap. Right now my 7, week and half old seedlings are under 5 26w Cfls =( After not being and idiot i realized my grow area is actually 3'x3'x7'8". I was seeing only 5ft tall before because of thats where the wire shelf is. But only mean that is as high as the light can go, but i still have 2'8" more above for ventilation. SO with that said I think the 400w should be fine. =)

Theres really nothing else that is as safe and works as well as a carbon filter. Check out bghydro.com they have carbon filters as cheap as $60, its well worth the money, and once you have a vortex fan/filter you can really start to get control of the airflow, moving all that hot air out means there will be more fresh air coming in, which means bigger healthier plants.

Yeah higher wattage is ideal, but he's indoor in a closet where heat is an issue, you got an outdoor shed pickleman, this time of year heat is no problem for you.
