Hi. I just bought a new 250w MH ballast, wired it up and it works fine except that after about a minute the bulb just shuts off even though the ballast is hummin' away. Anyone know what the problem could be?

It's an Advance ballast and yes it's grounded. Overheating sounds possible since after about 5 mins I can turn it back on but I just don't see it overheating that quickly. I'll check the grounds again.

Any chance it could be the bulb? It's new but I had it hooked up to a 250w lumatek electronic ballast initially and that ballast fried very quickly so I sent it back and got a good old fashioned coil ballast kit.

2 killers of lamp is heat and vibration.

There is a thermal overload in the ballast that will shut it down if temp gets to high.

Most commercial ballast are meant for outdoor use or in large rooms such as auditoriums. As most overloads are bi metal, they do get worn out, the cooler you keep your ballast the longer it will last. Electronic are usually the best.

Luminix, GE and Slyvania lamps are pretty good, there are cheap lamps on the market.

Also make sure that the metal tab inside the socket hasn't been lost is spring and got pushed back, just use your finger and pull it out a bit, not too much and be sure the fixture is off of course. Zappity do da.
