250w HPS bulb on 400w HPS ballast???

I understand what you're saying about the house bulb, but it's a completely different situation. On one hand you have ac current coming through at 120v and on the other hand you have a huge amount of current and voltage going into a bulb that must have an idle voltage. They work a lot differently than typical incandescents. There's no question that it will work, but there's going to be excess heat and the socket.

Ok... So what ur saying is, even tho its a 250w bulb, the ballast is still pushing out 400w to that bulb? I thought that the ballast would only push out whatever the bulb is requiring. Cuz I imagine that if a 250w bulb is gettin 400w worth of juice, it would've blown up a while ago! But he's been running it fine for the last few days. Please clear that up for me cuz I don't want my boys house to burn to a crisp! More importantly, that'll b a waste of sum good shit... LOL! J/K! Thx....

I'd NEVER use the un-reccomended bulb. I've seen first hand what CAN happen...say bye bye to your entire crop.

If the bulb doesn't blow up...it won't last as long, and it's RAELLY hard on the ballast itself.

Those of you that say you can do it?...you obviously know nothing about electricity...read up and start using your brains, cause one day your gonna come home to the fire department and police at your house!!

Would you try to shove a square peg into a round hole???
sorry bro but your the one that don't know about elecrcity.. i like when sum ass nine comes on here and says some thing willnot work.. when i put it right in front of you and your still to stupid to belive.. sorry but thats just the way it is. don't talk down on something you know jack shit about..

a ballast is just like a generator.it puts out that max wttage.. thats what it will run up to.. any thing less is ok. its just going to put out whats neded to fire the bulv\b. the ballast is not puting out the 400wtts unless thats what size the bulb you are running.. you can run up to four 100 wtt bulbs off that 400wtt ballast

Thx MG... K so that's just what I thought! The ballast is "capable" of pushin out 400w but u can use a bulb that requires less watts and the ballast will only push out whatever it needs! To me that makes sence! But I'm no electrician so I could be wrong! And according to what your saying MG... which is thru your own personal experience and what I've actually seen with my own eyes... IT WORKS! You CAN use a bulb that pulls less watts than what the ballast is capable of! You've done it... And I've seen it! Thx...

Yeah, I'm not doubting that is works. Electrical ratings are never exact, so you can get away with a lot of things. What you're referring to is current--you take what you need, but voltage is slightly different. If supplied too much voltage, or too little, components can burst (in the case of too much, which could cause too much resistance), or at the very least, it will shorten the lifespan of a component. The transformer is similar to a generator, but the capacitor and ignitor are not. They supply a starting charge that the bulb requires to operate. The voltages could very well be similar for each bulb, but, of that, I am unaware. Again, I'm not doubting it'll work, I'm just overly cautious with electricity.

LMFAO.... "I WIN"! Dude I just woke up to take my son to school and the starter on my truk is shot, so I'm fukin PISSED now that I gotta dish out $ for that shit TOO.... However... U made me laugh with that one MG! Thx! I needed that! Well Ooli... The ballast is wired for 120 volts! So its not as if it were wired 220 volt! I could kinda imagine seeing something wrong there! But everythings working just fine! Soooo... I think I'd have to go with MG on this one unless anyone else has had any of "THEIRE OWN EXPERIENCE" with a bulb blowing up or any malfunction! The subject is still open for discussion... So feel free to join in anyone! Thx all...

Nah its a Toyota 4Runner! I'm pretty sure its the starter cuz when I turn the key it makes that "claka claka claka" noise! LOL... Best way I can describe the sound! Anyways I got a jump from a neighbor and tapped on the starter and it cranked right up! So I just left it on in my driveway till I find somewhere I can take it to get replaced! So far cheapest is Pep Boys - $250 out the door with lifetime warrantee! So I'll be sitting at Pep Boys for some time today waiting for it to get fixed! But have no worries... I'll still be checking up on the forums with my BB! Can't get rid of me that easy! Lol... I can't get enuff of this forum! Everyone here helps out a lot! Not like other forums I've been on!

So a 400 W ballast will only run at 315watt with a 315watt CMH Bulb, or no
