2 x 1000 HPS, 8 Trainwreck, Under Current 8

This journal is to detail my first grow, share problems I run into, and hear advice.


My room is 7' x 7' x 8'

2 x 1000 watt, air-cooled HPS lights (used).

1 x 6'' can fan

1 x medium house fan

1 x exhaust fan (window sized).

The Hydroponic system being used is the Undercurrent 8, which has 8 eight gallon buckets each equipped with an air stone to bring oxygen to the roots.

Medium is hydrotron small clay pellets.

Base PPM of water (which is well water) is high at 500-600 PPM.

Nutrients are Foxfarm "Grow big" and "Big bloom", also "Superthrive" vitamin solution.

Strain is Train wreck (6 inch clones in rock wool).

Lighting is 18 on, 6 off.


DAY 1


Planting.

PH: 6.0

PPM: 890

Temp: 90 f

Humidity: 48

Pots are numbered 1 through 8 from right moving up to left and back again.

Pot 2 seems to be the runt of the litter (shown solo below).

Added: 28 teaspoons "grow big", 28 teaspoons "big bloom".

All measurements taken AFTER adding nutrients, according to foxfarm's feeding guide, it should be another week before I add anything else.

Day 2

Light timer broke and had to be replaced. Plants did not receive the right amount of light today.

Ph: 6.0

PPM: 880-920

Temperature: 85 f

Humidity: 50


Noticed a slight discoloration on the leaves of pots 1, 4, 5, and 8. Seems normal though, nothing serious. See picture of pot 1 below. Also noticed a strange "foam" accumulating in the Epicenter. What is it? Hopefully not some contaminant...see picture below.

Lights remain about 2 feet from plant tops.

Day 3
July 28th


Finally Hung Mylar behind pots 5-8, Prepared 5 gallons of water (filled up a bucket and left it out for the chlorine to burn off). Hand watered all of the pots (might not have been required, but did it anyway).

Ph : 6.3

PPM: 960-980

Temperature: 85 f

Humidity: 54

Added: 3 Cap fulls "superthrive" Plant vitamin.

Pots 1 and 5 seem a bit droopy...can't guess why that is. See two pictures of solo pots below. Foam has gone away, but there is a brownish gunk at the bottom of the pots...I think it's accumulated mud from the clay pellets.

Day 4
July 29th


Repaired a leak in air ducting.


Ph: 6

PPM: 980-1010 (too high? How can I lower it?)

Temperature: 85 f

Humidity: 60

Added: 5 gallons of Ph 6 water to Epicenter to top off tank. Prepared 5 more gallons for next time water level drops.

Pots 1, 4, and 5 all seem droopy. 6, 7, and 8 however look terrific. Decided it must be their close proximity to the Mylar.

With lighting being the factor, resolved to lower the lights by about 3 inches (closer to the plants).

Pot 8 looks the best in the bunch, inspecting closely, I noticed that it sits higher upon the clay pellets than the rest (i.e., the rockwool cube that the clone rests in is closer to the surface of the hydrotron.) Decided to raise each cube higher in each pot. During the "Transplant", I noticed that each cube is developing some little white roots! Great news...unless I just failed to notice them before...

But the droopiness does worry me...went ahead and watered each pot by hand just to be on the safe side.

At least you've invested in adequate lighting, but if only one light is on at the moment, and you're temperature range is between 85-90 degrees, those plants are going to struggle to survive. Appropriate lighting and a decent hydro setup are only part of the equation. Being able to create a nice mild temperature and humidity environment is, in my experience, the most important element. Unless you plan to run Co2 in there, I'd advise doing something about getting those temps down- immediately. Good luck with your grow!

Mcgician is right. Those temps just won't do. Gotta get better ventillation from those lights. Make sure your pulling enough cfm given your room size. Might need some boosters or something. For more info, I would visit GypsyBush thread or Al B. Fuct thread. Gypsy will be able to help solve alot of temp issues for ya. Like the set up though and they're looking good so far.

I thought 85 with 2 1000 watt lights was pretty good. I think the ambient heat of the building I'm growing in might be too high (to cool down the lights), The problem should fix itself in the winter...till then I think I might get a second house fan.

my only thing is, you really dont need that much light for 8 plants... 1 x 1000 would be enough. idk , your choice

85 with those 2 lights is good. Don't get me wrong. But if your plants could talk to you, they would say that they'd make more and better bud at 75, +/- a couple of degrees.

You're right. Winter time will greatly impact the ambient room temp. Should drop your temp naturally.

July 31st

Added 2.5 gallons of PH corrected water.

Ph: 6.0

PPM: 940-960

Temperature: 85 f

Humidity: 55


If the lights are making things too hot in the grow room, perhaps more air circulation would help? Today added a new table fan to the mix.

Could this be why pot 1 was so droopy? 4 and 5 have begun to improve, and with pot 8 looking so perfect...decided to Transpose the two (note in pictures below). Will know soon if it makes any difference.

Day 8
August 3rd

Ok, so things are still looking pretty good. I am extremely optimistic (but aren't I always).

I am preparing for a water change... But I think i might do it this time with pure (clean) water.

Left a bucket of water in the room under the fan, hoping this will raise humidity and lower the temperature...

Added a capful of superthrive.

Ph: 6.0

PPM: 940-980

Temp: 85 f

Humidity: 52%


Hand watered all the pots just for the hell of it.
